advice on v7 ribbon problem

hi all, i`ve searched high and low for this info , i hope someone out there can help. the white 5 core ribbon on my ps2 shows the two wires nearest the laser to be shorted together. i can get no further than the browser screen and am trying to find the reason why. any ideas. cheers.

Well, this'll probably be it. I hate this cable, but it's an easy fix. I had a V5 I had to repair and this cable was the cause. Only my problem was with the tray not ejecting. However, if you have these two things bridged, then that won't be doing any good either. Are the two strands bridged together on the Circuit board contact points (they are pretty close so you have to be careful)?

hi there, i`ve checked under a mag glass and cleared between the pins with a razor blade so i think the short maybe on the small pcb whatever it does. any thoughts. cheers..

So are they bridged now, lol?

elotunes 24-11-2004 09:46

yes it didn`t make any difference so any other ideas?

Well, just take some desolder braid and separate the connections. Do you have a picture of the problem - I'm getting a wee bit confused here...

The two pins nearest the lazer show a dead short on the meter. i guess if this is not supposed to be so then something is shorting on the pcb inside the dvd drive..

Well, they should give you some kind of reading. The pins you specify on a spare drive I have show a reading of '002.'

elotunes 24-11-2004 15:02

this is a zero ohms dead short?

lufcfan 25-11-2004 13:24

Not necessarily, no.

If you check the board in other places, you will find some places do read 000 and beep (well, on both my multimeters it does).

If the pins look to be connected, then you may have a case. If the pins look to have been soldered to in the past you may also have a problem here, but it is very, very rare that this cable has to be tampered with at all. I'm starting to think your problems lie else where...

hi my friend, i appreciate you taking some time to try and help me out. This is how it stands. If i switch on , press the button , the drive spins and the screen ends up at the browser menu with the dancing electron going on beside the writing, at this point the drive stops almost like a relay has gone off, the browser screen remains. just to complicate the issue, after a while i lose all video probably as it all heats up. i let it cool down and it goes back to the above. now i`m confused. any thoughts. cheers dave..

Hmm. This is very interesting, and by what you say, it sounds like a bit more than just a cable. I'll have a look around and see if there is anything I can find... :)

thanks for your help , hope you come up with something. cheers.
