There's 2 major problems to why you cant use your xbox to backup your movies.

1. Your xbox wont play DVD Movie files off the hdd. At least I dont think it will.

2. It cant get past the encryption most (99%) of all movies have on them.

The only way to play dvd's off the hdd is with an app called "Xbox Media Center". Unfortunately no menus are supported, just the vob files of a dvd (they are raising money to help the developers implement menus). Playing off of a disk is probably better.

Does dvd2xbox have a dvd decrypter?

unless it has a dvd decrypter, which probably would not work through ftp, you will just get a big sound file with a blank screen.

Hey sory to bring back this old topic but my friend just backed up some dvds onto his hd and he said they are playing fine. he said he was using xbox media player or xbox media centre, anyway it was something along thouse lines. Do you no which one he would be using?

Xbox Media Player is what the xbmc crew used to work on before they created xbox media center (which was supposed to be better and look more like the WinXP-Media Center edition). XBMP was abandoned over a year ago.
In Short, use XBMC.
