Best way to cool it down?

Hi,
I just installed a v1.5 xbit in a v1.1 xbox and when it is in the dashboard the cpu gets really hot and the light turns red but if im playing a game it is fine any ideas on why this would be? it only started to over heat after the chip install

How hot? You can always fit an 80mm fan in there.

Wait. A 1.1 box? Doesn't the 1.1 have an auxillary fan over the GPU? Would the GPU fan control fall under the same management as the main (rear) fan?

Also, depending on your bios, you could use XBTool to edit and increase the fan speed (though this is a little noisier, but its a non-intrusive "hum" sound that's really not that bad since I play games decently loud anyway). I've upped my fan speed to 60% (from the default 20%) and my system stays at a tolerable 48 degrees Celsius even after 2-3 hour stints. Without the sped up fan, my sytem was reaching temps of about 54 degrees C.

Additionally, I think most people here will attest to making sure the system is in a well ventilated area and the vents were unobstructed. It really does make a world of difference.

whats the xbtool? is it in slayers 2.6?

TylerDurden 19-10-2004 11:53

Yeah the v1.1 does have the little fan over the GPU. Thing is, sometimes they stop working. I think AX himself had one that didnt seem to work. Anyways, since this guy doesnt seem to know how to edit bios or even what they are, why dont you just send him your bios so he can flash his xbox with that.

TylerDurden 19-10-2004 14:11

Have you done the 80mm fan install, Tyler? I wanted to for a while, but I'm a little weary of all the cutting and case mod involved.

XBTool is a development tool (?) that allows for some editting of bios files. Settings such as the default color of the eject LED, bios size, large HDD partitioning, etc., and (in this case) fan speed can be editted. After which you may flash your mod with.

XBTool (as well as other dev softwares) are available from places like xbox-scene.org.

I'm interested in what's going on, the more I read the original post. I don't know half of what I want to know about the tech side of mods.

Yeah Ive done a couple of 80mm fan installs. On my first xbox which was a v1.1 I put an 80mm fan in and another smaller fan under the HDD. My hdd never heated up not even once, after that.

After I finally bought a dremel and a new xbox Halo edition, I did another an 80mm fan install to that as well. That one came out hella better. Im glad I didnt cut out the grill in the back this time. Anyways, this one looks so good that it almost looks factory.

hey xbtool worked great thanks for the help

TYLER: I've got a second box that is currently unmodded so I might try to do the 80mm fan install. I bought the box cheap and was going to keep it unmodded for XBL; my mod'd box runs hot when booted with the chip disabled. Did you follow any tutorials that you might point me in the direction of?

ADAM_T: Good to hear it worked out. Still curious though; how hot was the box temps before? I don't know a lot about electronic theory, but I think its a bit ludicrous to implement a cooling fan at 20% output. It seems more often than not that the cooling efficiency is inadequate, even on unmodded boxes; I've known a handful of people who've burned out boxes under moderate gameplay conditions (and the weather's never that bad around here, California).

You can find them at Xbox-Scene. Or if you wanna contact me on AIM I can send you them in a text file (which I like better). I also wont mind helping you out if you have any questions on the fly.

it was hitting 130ºf easy just sitting in the slayer dashboard so i took off the heatsink on the cpu and cleaned it up and put some shin etsu thermal grease on it and it lowered it by about 6ºf i know that intel p4's burn up at 169ºf
