Telemarketer back talk!

Ok we all know what a pain telemarketers are. I personally own a shop where we get called all the time. Yes I am on the list that's supposed to stop them too, so I guess it doesnt apply for all those jerks. Well where I work I cant really talk crap to everyone I think is a telemarketer because not everyone who calls is one. So basically what I want here is for you members to post your best and considerate remarks to find out if they are telemarketers.

Since most telemarketers call and ask for the "manager/owner" of the business thats usually my first clue telling me that they really are not customers.

What I usually ask first off is:

1. Are you a telemarketer? (this usually catches them off guard and most will answer "yes". Then I procede to hang up on them.)

But not all get fooled that easily so I need more tips. Soo post up guys. I know some of you guys can be real slik so lets hear it.

Well, the U.S. actually has laws that solicits have to follow. More in depth, they have to answer specific questions. My dad actually has a friend that has filed several suits, which he has own. He has even gotten over $2000 once.

EDIT: Read post below

http://www.junkbusters.com/script.html

There are some questions you can ask them. That can even get you money mwahahaha

I just talked to my dad about it. It wasn't a friend that was filing suits. It was actually in the news paper some time ago. Reason being, well, let me tell you.

SHE WAS MAKING $50,000 A YEAR OFF OF IT. OH MY GOD. SON OF A MOTHERS PET MONKEY DOG

Some questions were giving her up to $2000 alone. Alot of the time, they wouldn't even show up in coart, which as you know, is an instant win on her behalf.

Hey Tyler I have a 2 step answer for you here.

Step 1: Train your staff to refer anything not pertaining to regular business practice to a designated person who is trained to deal with these types of calls. If noone has been established in this regard then either appoint someone with a high level of common sense or have them redirect all calls to yourself. If you have a person in mind, train that person to take a message for the person who has the authority to make business decisions. Tell the caller that such authority is not available and have them leave a return phone number and that their message will passed along. Always use a ficticious name for the person who makes the decisions like say Frank Rizzo. This will serve 2 purposes.
1. The ficticious name will probably get junk mail at which can be easily identified and disposed of as it will be spam mail.
2. You never have to worry about getting caught up in a scam, and most likely they will never leave a return phone number unless it is legit.

Step 2: Use the "Dont call us, we'll call you" tactics, and never return a call unless you wish to do business with them.

Once this has been implemented and has been in effect for a period of time, the callers will give up and move on to the next poor sap, thus leaving you in peace. In addition you can relax knowing you will never get scammed or bothered ever again.

If you havent noticed, I am somewhat of an expert on detering scam artist. ;)

Edit: I almost forgot one very important rule. Teach the designated appointee that the business decision maker is NEVER available for immediate conferences.

Practicing this method will prevent any confrontations with solictors even though your first instinct would be to give them a piece of your mind. Actually you can rest assured, you will have the last laugh cause more than likely you will crack up at the junk mail you get in a ficticious name that dont exist. :p This is a proven strategy for handling soliciting annoyances.

Quall999 25-09-2004 05:57

I would ask them all those questions, then take em to coart for ones unable to answer. lol

TylerDurden 25-09-2004 11:54

@Quall, Im gonna read up on that site you posted as soon as I get a chance. It looks hella interesting.

@CGL, dude whenever I answer the phone thats how the calls are treated. I always use the alias "Lou Beaman" when they ask for a manager. And your right they do call back asking for a "Mr. Beaman" like they know the guy. BTW the boss is always out (if you know what I mean) plus he only shows up at 6pm for paperwork. ;) (Our shop is closed at 5pm)

Sometimes when Im in a playful mood (and only when I know its a telemarketer) I will abruptly start screaming that Ive dropped hot coffee in my lap. That usually confuses and discourages the telemarketer into hanging up. Its also good for a laugh when the other workers know what your doing.

Thanks for your tips so far guys.

Lol.

On your PC, record you saying "err" and just play it and loop it :) lol

RK 25-09-2004 12:25

just say please hold, then play some music down the phone, every now and again, pick it up and say 'your call is important to us' and various statements like that!!

crazygamelover 25-09-2004 12:29

Sounds to me like you got it under control dude. LOL btw that is just plain hilarious when they call back like that. I get it from time to time. I have been using that method since the beginning of time and it works most of the time. Every once in a while you get a persistant annoying lil bugger who dont get it, but they are few and far between now. I guess if you are already using this method, just stick to it and hopefully in time they will just give up. I like the Frank Rizzo name cause I got it from the Jerky Boys. I even get mail for him periodically. Now thats funny. I always tell them that Frank doesnt keep regular hours so unless you know his cell phone number its imposible to get ahold of him. They will sometimes ask for his number but I just tell them I am not at liberty to give it out and that usually works.
You could always tell them you are on the do not call list too. That usually gets the message across pretty quick. If you do identify one as a telemarketer, just tell them if they continue to call, you will forced to take legal action. That would definitely put a stop to it. LOL

TylerDurden 25-09-2004 18:07

@RK, I have done that well at least the music part, but the "your call is important to us" part is just hilarious! Ill have to remember that one. The bad part about that is it busys up the line so I cant do that one too often.

@CGL, Thats where I remembered that name. Jerky Boys is hella cool. Im sure eventually Ill probably just give up and tell them about the list thing. I kinda sorta wanna mess with them at least a little bit.

One other thing Ive been trying to remember to do (but I always forget when I have the chance) is:

Try to turn around and sell them stuff. Then be as persistant with them as they would be with us.

Hehehehehe now that is seriously funny. I will have to try that one myself. LOL :p I think I will give this more thought and come up with a good sales pitch for these knuckle heads. Normally I just get rid of them quickly but this could be a little fun atleast until I get bored with it and go back to getting rid of them quickly. :D

I was a past telemarketer

Hey Tyler.
about 2 years ago I was myself a telemarketer, i sold holiday packages. some of the best answers I had were:

"I have just been told I'm going to die of Cancer in 6 Months, Why the F$%k would I want a holiday."

"I used to work where you are calling from, When I found out they scamming peoples money I took them to court. Thank you BYE."

Thats all I have at the moment seeya's.

TylerDurden 30-09-2004 06:13

A couple of my friends were telemarketers too. Nobody stays long in that job. And theyll hire just about anyone.
