DVD9...anyone else backing these up?

I have the new Sony DVD+/- RW DRU-700A and it burns the new DVD+R DL format. I also got some Verbatim DVD+R DL discs from Meritline and I successfully backed up my copy of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance and Xenosaga Episode 1. I used the newest version of Nero, version 6.3.1.17. I haven't been on the forums for a while so I don't know if this has been brought up and if anyone else is doing this too.

I also backup a DVD Movie without compression on the new 8.5 gig DVD+R DL media. The discs are still really expensive, about $13 USD. Anyways, just curious on the status with the other members of this forums and if I was all alone in this...

ive backed up my Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance had to set the book type to dvd-rom as the ps2 didnt read it at first. Works so far on a mates v7s no problems at all but i am a little scared to try it on my silver v9.

DL DVDs $11 AUS, i am waiting for DVD-R DL

Hoooooraaaayyyyy!!!!

Gosh guys!

You really got my heart pumpin now! I just bought exactly the same Sony DRU-700A writer in Dubai After searching the WHOLE OF EUROPE and not finding one!!

I'm glad to hear that I didn't buy crap!!!!!! Tell me, what other programs(Alcohol120, CloneCD/DVD ...) do you use to create backups and what do
I need to play them?

Also, just for the fun of it, how do you compare this writer to other top quality writers like Plextor and LiteON etc!

I can assure you, if you would ask me, I would gladly answer : 'That's a wonderful choice!!'

Sony DRU-700A = rebaged liteon 832s

the liteon(sony) is good but the new Pioneer DVR-108 is even better it has 4x dl and much better burn quality. the nec 2500a is good too a bit better than the liteon in term of burn quality

Well I've backed up champions of Norrath onto the verbatim DL, and it's working on my V9 machine without any problems...but from the price of the DL disc, it's better off waiting till the prices fall before backing it up...take care of the original disc for now

****Update****
It seems that DL was not good enough for my ps2, it kind of hangs during the part where the data is suppose to be on the 2nd layer (ACT III). I tried using the original and it's working, therefore the problem lies with the backup.

1 interesting fact is that I've use kprobe(S/W to determine the quality of the burn) and the 2nd layer was in fact a better quality burn then then 1st layer.

Seems to me that the PS2 does not like DL backups, anyone else have their experience on burning this game or other game?? and has successfully went past the 2nd layer?

The latest update (VS0A) for LiteOn 832S dramatically improves the write quality... They are great drives ( I have one, and LOVE it - certainly wouldn't swap :) )

Well I've doubt on Ritek Media Lately these days, the quality is simply too variable to my liking, some are absolutely great, but some are simply *yucky* if you are going to spend that much on a DL disc, I would definately go for Verbatim or some other established brand.

Can I ask how do you define the write quality using the VS0A firmware? as in using Krobe2 to do a read test? would you mind sharing with me the PI/PIF readings of the disc.

Thanks

Did you use Nero??? I tried using Recordnow Max and it didn't recognize the discs. Also....$10 a disc? A lot better than the $13 a disc I paid for my 3-pack. Still Hecka expensive though. I will also wait until this media comes WAY down in price. I just had to see if it worked :D . It's funny Verbatim was the only brand selling the DL discs when I got my 3-pack from Meritline. Maybe they will start competing and the prices will go down. :D

Well I did use Dvd Decryptor to make an ISO for it...and burn it using nero. The reason I did it this way is that Nero always have problems making ISO while disc size close to or bigger then 4.2gb...the burned image will always fail to be recognised by the PS2.

BTW i paid $14.95 for the disc at JB HiFi in Australia. Heck...quite an expensive experiment to see if the PS2 recognized DL Disc. Oh I forgot to add that I did changed the booktype of the disc to DVD-ROM.

The real worry i have with these discs is how good the reflectivity is (i.e how hard is yr laser working to read them) If u can fraz yr laser with a less than good make dvd-r then it must be harder work for the laser to read dual layer.
