v9 exploded w/ infinity!!! why?

A v9 was modded with a Matrix Infinity. All solder points were checked and appeared fine, so it was fired up to test a PS2 game and DVD and both worked fine! The unit was reassembled and when turned on again, it gave only a blackscreen. Huh? Disassembled again and tried booting again ... POP/FLASH ... oh, crap. What happened? Here's pics of the install:

And here's after the POP/FLASH:

Holly crap..... Well it looks to me like the tracks on the back of the mod chip must have shorted out something directly underneath it on the motherboard.

Very nice pictures.... quality wise that is..... cuz really those picture made my spin curve a little. I'll have to see the chiropractor today now.

The fuse on the PSU can easily be replaced. But it might not be worth it, cuz looking at the other fried components they might be replaceable but there also looks like there might be damage to the tracks in that area as well. Might be worth it to sell it off as parts (www.rickspsxparts.com) and start over.

**EDIT**

Or if it didn’t short out from the mod chip....something else obviously did! When you screwed the case together whatever it was got pinched together tight enough to make a connection and short something out. That’s why it didn’t do it when you had the case off of it.

Good luck.

It probably destroyed the chip as well.

JESUS! :)

I think it's time to start over...

Thats the oddest thing Ive seen in a while. Im glad Ive always at least had double sided tape all across the back of my chips.

Tyler!

I'll say - I always use insulation tape to wrap my chips...

Damn!!!!!!! Dont the matrix infinity come with sticky backs?

Thats the first time ive seen that 2 pal Jesus. I think you should contact matrix and tell them. But otherwise unlucky. You could sell it on ebay for spares. Or go on that site sped gave u and get a replacment mobo. Who chipped your console?

My Condolences Dude! I got a V10 with Infinity Chip done thru a Very Young Pro and I don't have any problems.. :( :(

WOW!! I hope I never see something like that happen to me! Talk about your catastrophic failure. I’ve never seen any device blow out at 3 different locations. 3V line looks like it might have shorted out on the shield if no tape was cover over the chip itself, I always put some insulating tape over my chip, especial at that location. I can’t imagine the 3V short to cause a mess like that but sounds like something definitely shorted out. Big mess at the Controller port ribbon? Maybe the controller cable get damaged and short out on the 7.5V line. Not too many good parts left on that machine, I’d dare say.
