cant i use a 20gb hdd in the ps2?

i see on the compatibility list by the way that other people have had success w/ smaller drves, also wheres a good tut on how to set it up after its installed can i do it w/out having to ordera prog to format it?

i used a 20gig as a test subject before i stuck a 80gig drive in and it worked fine
