Fastest DVD ROM drive?
I had a couple of questions regarding DVD-ROM drives...
1. Why is it that some games/movies rip at slower speeds than others. I use DVD Decrypter, and some DVD's or games I back up rip at like 4.0X, some at 16.0X. Why is this? 2. What make and model DVD-ROM drive to you recommend for doing DVD and game rips with? I want something that rips as fast as possible. Any drive with a good cache and so on? I don't know much about them. I know these aren't directly related to PS2 back ups, but pretty close. Thanks for all the help!! |
Just a straight forward recommendation really, but I have an LG-8160B and it rips a full PS2 DVD in around 8-10 minutes at 16x. Great drive and ultra reliable image making, even at that speed! :)

Ive read that the closest to true 16x are the Toshiba's. I personally have a Toshiba SD-M1712 with hacked firmware to be able to read dvd movies as fast as possible.
About your question on why dvd movies rip slower, its because dvd drive manufacturers set a 2x or 4x speed limit. Its just the way it goes. So if you can find a firmware hack that disables that limit then your golden. Tyler! |
Yep. I have a pioneer dvr 106. It used to be able to burn games quicker than it could read the image as it was limited to 2-4 speed ripping. With the hacked firmware it now rips at up to 12 speed so well worth looking for hacked firmware.

Pioneer is good but I don't care about speed seeing as I backup all my games at 2x.
