Messiah 2 problems

I just recently purchased a PS2 with Messiah 2 installed, but it doesn't work right. It doesn't boot PSX games (original, import or backup). Whenever I try to start it I just get the message to insert a Playstation or Playstation 2 game.

PS2 games it does boot (both original and backup) but quite often they crash on the loading screen.

It doesn't boot anything after resetting (same message as with PSX games). I always have to turn of the entire PS2 when starting up a new game.

What can I do about this problem? The store that modded this PS2 doesn't exist anymore (I got it 2nd handed). Any help would really be appreciated.

I'd rip the chip out and check the install. Sounds like a bad install, or a bad chip to me... :(

Small update:
I did manage to get it to play PSX games (I failed to notice the existence of the PSX mode). However it still refuses to play import PSX games (which is over half my collection). Biggest problem of course remains the fact that the PS2 crashes every 20 minutes or so (which makes it virtually impossible to play games).

Still sounds like bad chip/install...

Does it crash when u have switched the m2 off and are playing an original? What version ps2 and messiah is it?

Sounds like finger trouble on the mode switching for the psx games. If its a M2 1.33b then the psx mode can be tricky to get into and annoying to get out of.

ASs for why it crashed every 20 mins....sounds like its overheating. As an experiment remove the lid and blow a fan into the ps2 and see if it lasts for longer. Could be that the install is a bit messy and blocking the normal airflow.

It sometimes crash's because of the laser.

I just noticed it only crashes in Disgaea (which is in CD format), so it could be a problem with the laser. If that's the case then the chip itself seems to working fine except for the fact that I still can't play PSX imports. I really would like to try to use a PS2 import (that's why I chipped the PS2 in the first place), but I'm afraid it might not work and I'd be stuck with an imported PS2 game I can't play. I live in europe by the way so with imports I mean NTSC games.

If only Sony would make the Playstation region free then all this messing around with mod chips wouldn't be necessary (at least for me).

I would say its a problem with disgaea thats causing your PS2 to crash and not the laser as it only happens on that game.

As for not being able to boot import psx games......Bad installation or not a Messiah 2 fitted. Have you taken a look at the chip yrself, or confirmed with the seller that it is the genuine article as the M2 should boot everything u put in.

I also considered the option that it isn't a Messiah 2 which is installed. The thing is that I'm not too handy and don't really feel like opening up the playstation2 myself. I've decided to buy an import PS2 game to see if it works. I want to play import games anyway no matter even if I have to get another chip installed (so geting an import game wont be throwing away money).
If it works then I'm happy (I still have an old modded PSX so I can always play my imported PSX games on that).

where do u live? then we can tell you a good mod installer in that area.

EDIT by bighap:
Lets not talk about downloaded games huh?

lufcfan 01-07-2004 13:33

That's always a good idea :)

Dead_meat1200 01-07-2004 17:40

I'm against downloaded games. I just ordered the game by the way (EB games) so now it's legally mine.
