Unmodded PS2 V4 and recordable media

My PS2 V4 was repaired by Sony because of a DRE. Now it only reads DVD+R backup movies. I get a red screen when I try to play DVD-R/-RW/+RW disc. Do you think they replaced it with a laser that can only read DVD+R or my DVD-R were burnt incorrectly? Thanks.

It may need a laser adjustment. What brand of media are they burned on??

DVD+R TDK RICOHJPNR01 OK
DVD+RW TDK RICOHJPNW01 Disc read error
DVD-R TDK RITEKG04 Disc inserted is not a valid playstation 2 disc
DVD-RW TDK TDK502sakuM3 Disc read error

Is there a difference between the 'Disc inserted is not a valid playstation 2 disc' error and the 'Disc read error'? Perhaps the DVD-R 'Disc inserted is not a valid playstation 2 disc' error just means the disc is readable, but the data is not able to be processed. Thanks.

Disc Read Error means that the ps2 laser isn't powerful enough to read the data from the disc. The disc may very well have a valid image on it but due to different reflective properties of various types/formats of disc the ps2 laser head just ain't up to the job of readin them.

Not a valid ps2 disc means that the ps2 has read the disc and decided that its not playable, i.e DVDVideo,PS2 or PS1 format.

Advice is stop using rewritables (of either format)as yr ps2 laser isn't up to the job of reading them. As for why yr ps2 reads +r but not -r is strange. It is usually the other way round. Try using some more PS2 friendly DVD-R media like Ritek G4 dvd-r. If still not working then stick with what works (+r dvd's). There is no mod that sony carries out that would make yr ps2 read +r but not -r.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks, looks like my PS2 is able to read DVD-R, but cannot understand the data. I'll try again.
