Xbox 2 will NOT be backwards compatible

Quote:

Sources close to Microsoft's senior Xbox executives have confirmed that the company does not intend to make its next-generation console, which is set to be launched by late 2005, backwards compatible with existing Xbox software.

Speculation about the backwards compatibility functionality has been rife since it emerged that Xbox 2 - codenamed Xenon - will have radically different hardware to the original system, with a non-x86 processor, no hard drive and an ATI, rather than NVIDIA, graphics chipset, all of which would make running Xbox titles on the platform very difficult.

GamesIndustry.biz has now learned that Microsoft does not plan to provide any backwards compatibility in the next-generation Xenon platform - and indeed, that senior executives at the company don't believe backwards compatibility to be an important feature for consoles.

my god
xbox 2 will get more @$$ raped then a prison movie by ps3

MrCaine01 21-06-2004 17:06

Once again backwards compatibility question....

It seems that M$ doesn't like the idea of making Xenon backwards compatible with it's current xbox line. I got this from an article on Xbox-scene.com

personally I think it's a huge mistake for M$, simply for the fact of how much money we've poured into our game libaries as is. When I got my PS2 I sold my old PS1 and I didn;t lose a single game in the process, so I already ahd something worth playing when I got my PS2. MS really needs to consider it some more but I think backwards capatilbity adds to a system.

if microsoft does everythin that this latest rumor says
then its goin down to heeeeeeeeeeeeell

JiveTurkey 21-06-2004 19:16

Amen brother. The backwards compatibility is one of the 2 things PS has that Xbox doesnt. It would foolish not to.

AXmichigan 21-06-2004 19:26

yuup
idiots
and no hdd now
ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssstupid asses

Pop Smith 21-06-2004 20:26

I think that not including Backwards compatability is an anti-piracy step, cuz if it was backwards compatible it would be *cough* easier *cough* for modders to hack the second XBox (which is gonna happen anyway, even if its threw exploits like the cube). Looks like M$ is gonna loose this round of the war too.

AXmichigan 21-06-2004 21:18

yea
its cuz theyre stupid
they musta got whatever theyre smokin from bush

MrCaine01 21-06-2004 23:29

my interptation of the article about not having backwards capability is this:

"Hi, we're microsoft! We here in the great MS state have decided that our ventures in the video game market is futile and we thought: "Hey, if we're gonna get screwed by Sony for market share why not screw the consumer as well!" NO hdd and NO playing your current game library on our next gen system! Aren't we great?"

I mean seriously MS is commiting system suicide and dooming Xenon before it hits shelves. PS3 is gonna play ps1 and ps2 games thus making a huge library of games to be played upon release, and it's not like son;y doesn't have heavy hitter PS2 and PS1 games to easily create some extra software sales. Meanwhile all our xbox games collect dust and sit next to our uber-fied boxes doing nothing all cuz MS won't listen to the gaming public.....just like with the original xbox controller it's a stupid mistake.

Xbox 2 Backward Compatibility Rumors Debunked?
>> From TeamXbox.com:
Quote:

After a swell of controversy from yesterday’s article at Gamesindustry.biz regarding no backward compatibility between the Xbox 2 and the current Xbox platform, we have received an official statement from Microsoft that appears to deflate many of the claims as pure speculation:
“Recent stories in the press about future Xbox products are nothing more than pulp fiction. Microsoft hasn’t made any announcements regarding the next generation, so it’s far too early to speculate about specifics, including backward compatibility. In fact, this media conjecture is irresponsible. The credibility of any publication willing to compromise fact in favor of a catchy headline must be questioned. Xbox fans are smart enough to distinguish truth from sensational reporting.”

While this statement doesn’t definitively state that the Xbox 2 will or will not support backward compatibility, it appears that the feature is still up in the air at this point.

Pop Smith 22-06-2004 17:04

Strange indeed, its a good thing they mention that article i quoted ;)
Looks like we need to wait for the official word from M$

AXmichigan 22-06-2004 19:16
