to find popular games you should search old games which are being played until today and will be played at least for the next 1-2 years: as DIABLO-WARCRAFT-AGE OF EMPIRES THE CONQUERORS

Command and Conquer is extremely popular, well all games by Westwood are...

Doom is gud, all the old games that are still out now and still being bought or have decent carry ons e.g. CnC series.

In terms of Sales, nothing even comes close to The Sims series. :(
