Best places to buy chips and HDD troubles

I have a V4 PS2, I heard that the best modchip for this PS2 that is actually still being made is the DMS3.

I have three questions

1. Is this chip reliable for a V4? This chip hasent been known to cause problems or break down often has it? Also, I heard that the V4's might have laser problems, what do you know about that?

2. Will I be able to install and use a HDD in my ps2 with this chip in it?

3. Are there any other options for having full direct booting and HDD support for a v4 ps2 other then a dms3?

4. Where is a good place I can get one? What is the average price for one?

Im guessing no matter what I will have to pay over $100 for both the chip and install wont I?

1. According to the dms3 forum people have there share of problems with this chip. V4 consoles had weak lasers to start with. if its has ANY problems reading dvd media then i would sell it and buy a new console.2. Team DMS claims it works but i know no one with a dms and hd to confirm it.3.Matrix Infinity, which is my personal choice over the DMS3.I ordered my chips from www.divineo.com. there about 50 bucks and worth every penny.

I was talking to the norcalmods guy about modding my ps2, and he said that the matrix inifnity chip recently got a upgrade to use a HDD as well, any information about this or other chips that are option for a person with a v4 ps2.

I also heard that since the lazer is having loading problems but isnt dead yet, I could possibly get sony to fix it for me, which should help agiant the DVD-R loading problems that V4 ps2s have.

u know kahfans found a way to use any therid party hdd with any mod chip ;) so u dont need dms3 just for that opition unless u want a dms3.

Yes if people could try that out and post about it, that would be very helpful.

Cyber.....you could have it fixed by Sony and all might be well for awhile, but the V4 will still have a crappy laser. They won’t upgrade the laser to a KHS-400C (what’s in the V5-V10), they might not even give you a new laser, they might just clean it and adjust the pots and I'm sure it will all work great. But for how long? If it is still reading originals well you might just want to get rid of the thing and get yourself a new V10 PS2.

Yes the infinity team has released a firmware update that they claim supports the HDD. However I can’t confirm nor deny this as I do not have the HDD yet. Once I get one I'll post if the infinity is working with the HDD or not.

Sigh, everybody is telling me to just get a new PS2

I can afford to mod it, but I cannot afford to get a new ps2, its not that easy to just get a new ps2 for me.

seaneyb2003 02-05-2004 06:56

welll if u love ur ps2 thhat much get a mod installed and when the laser dies get a new one.

or sell you ps2 on ebay and buy a premodded console.

Cyber Akuma 02-05-2004 15:36

Im not in love with it, I just cannot at the moment afford a new one, especially not a premod.

Are there any guides about reinstalling/tweaking/etc the ps2 v4 lazer if it started screwing up on me? Because I dont have much of a choice, I might be able to make the money to buy a premod v9-10 in two or three years, and mostlikely will if by then my ps2 is starting to screw up, but I cant afford it now. So ill mod my V4... but.... im looking for a mod that will work with the v4, boot anything (especially original imports, thats the main reason im getting it) and will with the the hdd and actionreplay/codebreaker.

The only modchips I know that do all these (or claim that the firmware upgrades will soon) are the dms3 and the matrix infinity, which is why I want to get one of those.

Edit: I was reading through many identification guides, and all of them said that my ps2 can actually be either a V4 or a V7, is there any way to make sure which it is?

seaneyb2003 03-05-2004 01:14

is ur 39003-39002-39004 its a v7

if its 300003 its v4

wack an r on the end u could have a 5/6

well if u looking for imports get a dms3 caus it forces the game to play in a diffrent signal eg pal forced to ntsc. its up to u and how far ur budget stretches.

Cyber Akuma 03-05-2004 18:29

Its a 30001R, which apparently the all the guides I read identify as a possible V4 or V, there is no screw in the HDD bay so it isnt a v5 or v6. Is there any other way I cna make sure? Im really hoping that its a v7 and not a v4 so that I wont have to manually replace my lazer every 1-2 years. Itll be a long time till I can afford a new ps2 or a premod.

BTW, I just heard that the DMS3 lets you output to any video mode you want regardless of the original game, that means I can finally play some of those PSX pal imports I have in NTSC mode right?, my tv dosent support pal. Guess im going DMS3, especially if the harddrive supprot works........... now I just hope that it works with cheatdisks.

Ill wait like another 2-4 months though, by them the hdd support and stuff will probably be confirmable or not. I can mod my xbox in the meantime and get some of those imports I want for my ps2 as they come out before they start becoming hard to find. I can mod it later then.

The only thing I am worried about is that if my ps2 compeltely kicks the bucket after I have bought FFXI, I would need to reformat the HDD in order to make it fit in a new ps2, AND get it remodded......

Well, if that happens I can probably just take the old chip out of my broken ps2, so itll at least cost half as much.

EVOEvo 03-05-2004 20:45

if ur ps2 still plays origianls sell it on ebay im sure u can get $100 out of it and i know a guy who sells them on there for $130 shiped for v7s used all the ones i bought from him worked well just buy u a good used v7 and have loy to install a chip for u he dose installs for $40 i belive with return shiping so if u get a duo u can get it all done for about $100 for every thing.

Cyber Akuma 04-05-2004 10:39

There IS an R at the end, but it needs to have a screw in the hdd tray to be a 5/6, which it dosent have.

TylerDurden 04-05-2004 10:47

I think there were a limited number of "revised" version 4's.
