DVD Reader EIDE type

Need advice on internal DVD drive (read only). I have looked at the sony 1621 but have read several bad and a few very-bad reviews on this drive.

How about Pioneer DVD-ROM drives ? ?

Appreciate your help.

If your getting a reader then Id recommend any of these Toshiba models:

Toshiba SD-M1612
Toshiba SD-M1712
Toshiba SD-M1802

I have the SD-M1712 you can put a firmware hack on them to read faster than the usual dvd movie speed of 2x. They are great.

Tyler -

Can you elaborate a little on your preference for Toshiba drives?

Does your Toshiba read all variations of DVD media:
DVD+/-R, DVD+/-RW, standard original movies ? ? ?

Would appreciate your thoughts on the subject.

forget the toshiba 1802, it sucks. the other 2 models are hard to get these days :(

toshiba drives read +r -r +rw -rw and they are very good for reading safedisc copy protection.

Thanks, Tyler & Eagle.

I have ordered a *Toshiba SD-M1712* for $28.99 (Seems like a good price.) and it should be here in a week.

TYLER, I would like to know more about the hacked firmware, as I don't have ANY knowledge of this technique.

EAGLE, can you explain or point me to an explanation of "safedisc?"

Thanks for your help !!! :)

When you get your drive Ill walk you through flashing your hacked firmware.

Also Ive read that Toshiba's with the hacked firmware are known to be one of the fastest readers of dvd's.

@Eagle

Can you post your opinions on why the 1802 sucks? I actually ordered that model but got the M1712 instead. Mine was a Feb 2004 made one too. I understand some people were confused as to why this model was still being made.

i've read a lot of negative things about the 18 series of the toshiba drives at cdfreaks. the 18 series is supposed to have a different chipset than 17 oder 16 series. read it should not support fast error skip (17 and 16 did!) and overall performance should be beyond the older models.

Interesting. Lucky me I guess. ;)

Tyler -

Thanks for the offer of help via private email. I cannot get AOL messenger on my machine.

Anyway, I should have the Toshiba read-only drive up and running later in the week. If it appears to slow for my needs, I'll get back to you.

Thanks again,

Luke
