When my DVD is working..computer goes bizerk!!!

Hello m8's

I recently bough Asus DVD +-r/rw Dual (model: drw-0402p/d)....Now..whenever my DVD is working (copying, burning opening) mouse pointer goes bizerk...disappering/appering, computers slows down drasticly, even now when i type my DVD is burning and letters are 3-5 seconds late!?!?!?...I have relativly fast machine...

mobo: Asus p4p8x
processor: 2,6 GHz Pentium Intel (800Fsb)
Mem: 2x256 DDr Kingston (400Mhz)
Os: Win2k SP4
Grafic: Abit FX5200 128 Mb DDR

H E L P!!!!!

p.s. My friend sugested that it might be PSU....i have 280W..could this be a problem ...I tested in Probe ....12v goes on 11.975 and back ... 5v does to 4.999

yes it should be your power supply, your comp specs should handle a dvd burner fine. try getting a 400w PSU

Heres a link to a page that tells you what the minimumPSU wattage should be for your system http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/

I can already see you need a bigger PSU, the P4C CPU's are wattage hogs and when (I do mean WHEN not if) you decide to upgrade your video card chances are it will need more wattage as well as a very stable PSU to prevent application crashes which I'm sure you already have experience by now with the current PSU. Keep in mind stabability is hard to find in a cheap PSU even if its advertised as high wattage. Go with an Antec True power PSU or if you want to cut corners on cost try a Thermatake Purepower 420watt or better for that system.

wooooooow....Sams choice..thanks a lot for this very usefull info....thanks Bushwick2002 as well...Friends i must tell you that i have 280w....and recomended is 418W...!!!!!!!!!!!

2 hdd-s
2 usb (cable and printer)

Antec (Truepower) will not disappoint you. I would really lean toward that brand. Without testing a PSU a crude but often good way to judge it is simply by weight. If its heavy its most likely a good unit.

I had to go through alot of power supplies before I learned not to use cheapies on high end systems that are worthless brands (Powmax, Q-max, and Real PC Power to name a few) even though they claimed to be high wattage between 450 and 500 for most, they are horribly unstable.

One other PSU brand besides Antec and Thermaltake that did the job fine for my high end systems was a Soyo brand. I thought I would mention it becuase it has a neato looking little front panel that you can tweak a couple important rail voltages with (Best looking PSU I own). Antec has something similar and even better quality but the Soyo unit is stable enough to run my P4 3.0C GHZ system with an ATI Radeon 9800 pro video card without any stabability problems you'd get with the cheapy power supplies I mentioned above (You know like an occasional video game lockup, a slightly flickering LCD screen, and if its really bad you'll get either app restarts or worse yet your computer might restart itsself out of the blue:eek: ).

Heres a link to the Soyo PSU I'm talking about. http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduc...101-301&depa=0
Whereever Belgrade is, I'm sure you can do a Google search and find something in your area if your not in the US. Goodluck.

There is also a Belgrade Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, Nebraska, and Texas USA ;) . And probably a bunch more elsewhere in the world just to add more facts to your info :D . Probably all of them named after the one in Serbia I presume.

I would suspect that rebekic's burner is not busmastering and is running in PIO Mode or Multiword DMA. This needs to be checked.

Power has nothing to do with this. The website referred to for power usage contains typical nonsense. Let's take a 200GB Seagate ST3200822A. On a +12V start up at 2.8 Amps it will draw just over 25 Watts but its power management requirements, in Watts, are

Active: 12.5
Idle 7.5
Standby (typical) 0.7

and is representative of many drives. SCSI Cheetas draw more power and dissipate more, but nothing near 25W. Any consumer ATA drive that peaked at 25W during utilisation, as they suggest, would fail in minutes.

25 Watts for a SCSI Controller card?! Please, even at 64-bit long slot, the low voltage used by PCI cards would need to draw enough amps to melt the mainboard tracks.

Could you please tell how to check that....if you mean device manager/Ide ATA atapi controllers/Prtimary (secondary) IDE channel/properities......the it is set to DMA (ultra DMA mode)..if not give me some more details...Thanks
