Strange modding problem
I modded a mates xbox this evening (V1.2) with the x.b.i.t (My third install with this mod :) )
I flashed the most current bios I could find on my pc to the xbit (an x-cuter bios) and everything seemed to be running fine. Backups loading, great! But then when i tried to get to the dashboard it gave the code 13 error (no hard drive, dashboard, dvd drive) the full works! Confused so i tried booting a backup again....yeh games load fine. It just didn't seem to find the microsoft dashboard. Anyway reflashed it with an earlier bios and now it works fine. Any idea why? The xbox has no evo x installed. |
Its probably a problem with the name of your dashboard. Make sure you name your dashboards according to what the bios looks for.

Hi tyler, well yeh thats the logical explanation (and right) but I was just curious as to how a standard xbox with no mods apart from the the chip itself (Ie the harddrive in the machine hadn't been touched!!) couldn't load the xbox dashboard.
I flashed the chip again with an earlier version of x-cuter and it's fine now. .....then again wasn't there a dodgy version of the x-cuter bios goin around and they released another within days? Maybe thats the one i flashed :S |
Like I said its booting using the bios on the chip. If youve renamed the your xboxdash.xbe to something else in order to boot up to evox dashboard or whatever. Then when the xbox looks for the real xboxdash it wont load when the chips off.
Get on AIM and Ill walk you through the whole thing if you wish. Tyler! |
No tyler i think you're misunderstanding what i'm getting at.
The xbox has NEVER had evox or anything on it. I broke the seals installing the mod. (ie tonight). Nothings been renamed on the HD cause evolution x has never been run, it's never had an ftp on it. It's basically a machine which is standard, apart from the XBIT I've been doin xbox mods for over a year now so I know what you're getting at but it's not what I'm talkin bout. for some reason the bios was not recognising the original xboxdash.xbe and bypassing the check for it. it has never been renamed etc. I reflashed with an earler version of x-cuter and now it works. The HD has always been untouched |
Hmmm, now thats interesting. I wonder what exactly your problem could have been.
Which bios did you have when the problem occured? Tyler! |
The bios which wouldn't boot the dashboard is 4980.67_256k
Any other x-cuter bios works fine. This is why i'm so confused about it. I even tried putting 4980.67_256k on bank 1 of the xbit and the rest on other banks (I had six various bios's. 4 of them were x-cuter, 2 of them were others) The rest all boot the dashboard fine, but whenever I use 4980.67_256k it gives the microsoft warning code. |
Well you know there is a new update to the bios you currently have. 4981.67_256k has been released not too long ago. Try using that one. The one you had was buggy (read the nfo) when you get the new version.

Thought it might have been. I remember readin about a dodgy bios.
It sure as hell made me look a fool tho. Sat in front of a whole room full of people and then the damn thing messes up. Good thing about the xbit tho is that I flashed it through my laptop whilst still installed in the xbox. Damn fine feature IMO! Especially as most people don't wanna use evolutionx! |
I am sorry about your flopped demonstration. But it is funny LOL. I know its happened to me at least once in the past. ;)
Let us know how and if the new bios fix your prob. Tyler! |
heh, they made a mistake and the 4980 looked for "msxboxdash.xbe" instead of "xboxdash.xbe". Either edit it with xbtool, or upgrade.
|
yeh i upgraded the bios and it's fine. Had all the kids asking me if i'd broke it tho.... annoying or what!
Oh well! |
