Dvd 4x Discontinued. . .

Ok well, I had a pioneer a05 that I bought for a really good price a couple of months ago, but had to take it back cause money was tight. So a couple weeks ago, I go to FRYS and ask them for the AO5 and they tell me they dont have any. I ask when theyll get them in. They say - never. Its discontinued for the a06. So I'm like damn I dont wanna pay 200 someodd bucks for that. And I dont, and get a TDK for 150. Worked fine. Again money problems came up - I go back yesterday to get the TDK. Sorry we're sold out. I almost had a heartattack. I go to the DVD Burner section, and they have all of 3 or 4 brands of DVD Burners, no brand name. They had a polaroid and a Emprex which are all BTC burners, but one is priced less than the other -. I go up to the guy and I say, your DVD section isnt stocked. And he says whats there is there, most companies have discontinued production of there 4x's and are going to roll out the 8x dvdburners. So I grabbed an emprex, kept my receipt, and hopped that in two weeks I'd see an 8x or a returned Pioneer.

On a side note, not being able to wait for PRINCOS, I got some FUJIFILM DVD's for 30 bucks, and these suckers have booted flawlessly everytime. If you're like me and cant do the internet thing, definitely check these suckers out. GREAT QUALITY can kiss my ass.

Here's an OEM A06 for $150.... boxed $180...

ED! 01-12-2003 11:34

What is OEM. Isnt it like specefied to a specific system?

seaneyb2003 01-12-2003 11:37

no oem means its just the dvd writer no cables or screws or software. The software is easy to get hold off you can get hold of it in all good computer stores

mach7 01-12-2003 11:42

With OEM you usually get the software disk and the bare minimum screws and paperwork. You don't get the fancy box with buzzwords all over it, ripe for sale. You also usually only get the manufacturer's warranty (no 15 day CompUSA guarantee), which, for Pioneer, is pretty good.

If I hadn't spent 400 bucks on an external Sony a year ago I'd be all over that OEM like white on rice.

My mistake, you don't get any bundled software, you do get a disk with the drivers.

wow thats cheap im going to have to get one and to think i payed 120$ for a 2x only - meadia arrrrrrggg has any one here tested 8x burners yet on ps2 games ?

ED! 01-12-2003 14:34

Are there even ANY 8x out there yet? I sure as heck know I havent seen them. I was JUST told awhile ago that the -r's were being phased out for either + or dual format.

bighap 01-12-2003 14:44

Plextor has an 8 x burner...

ihaveanosebleed 01-12-2003 14:56

Yup, Plextor 708A $303 Canadian but 8X is + media only. ( I've been told they're using 4X media at 8X ) I see the Pioneer drive's dropped to $188. Sh*t I haven't had my drive for a week yet!

ED! 01-12-2003 15:01

Anyone try using + to burn PS2 Games? What's the boot reliability? And plextor you say.

There should be a "budget" dvd thread. I find it funny that two different vendors were getting BTC drives. Hilarious.

Most people find -R to be better for games than +R (myself included).

But, +R is better for movie backups.

Go with the A06 Bighap pointed out, that thing is CCHHEEAAPP!!!!
