Patching PS1 game to work on PS2?

Just got my PS2(chipped 2 days ago). I've got no problem copying & playing PS2 backups, but have had problems getting my old collection of PS1 backups to work. Out of all the titles I've tried so far all the Pal versions seem to work fine but none of the NTSC versions will boot at all. Am I right to assume that this is the same sort of region lock-out as in the PS1?
I've tried region patching a couple of USA games with both Patch-It & Gamester region patchers off the PS Utils page and the games now load & play fine but the screen is all messed up (massive black borders)
Does anybody know if theres a region patcher that doesn't affect the TV output in this way?

you do not have to patch any ps1 games use the ar2 ( disc 2 ) with cheats on and your games should boot

I'm using a Region X disk not an AR2 & I don't fancy shelling out another £20.Does anybody know if I can boot the games using the Region X, I've tried just about every variation using the disk & I can't seem to get any PS1 games to boot?

M8,

What modchip do you have???

i boot my PS1 backups on my PS2 by putting the CDR in the drive, power off for 5 seconds power back on and it boots, you ownly use the REGION X for PS2 backups or a different region dvd.

Cheers

As far as I know It's a NEO 2.2, although It could be a NEO 2.5. To boot PS1 backups I have to hold the reset button in for just a second.Like I say PAL/EURO backups work fine, but any USA/JAP titles just wont boot (I've tried about 50 odd titles).
Any ideas?

I believe you have to boot with a non-import original and then swap in the import. It's a sort of EA Boot method
