if the concept is the same as internal drives, there are a number of things to be done for it to work. you may or may not have checked the following but i will try to list them off the top of my head for you.
1. check to make sure the drive jumper is on master or the factory setting. also check all cables. (ide, scsi, usb, sound, power)

2. each device must have a driver. the driver may be incorporated in the burn software cd. if so it will setup the drivers when you install the cd. (if not you may aquire a driver from either the manufacture site or windrivers.com.

3. the case which you already said it came with its drivers.

4. make sure the usb is setup and working correctly. right click my computer, then left click properties. click device manager and look / scroll down the list to usb. click on it then check its properties. you want to make sure there are no conflicts with the resources and that it is workig properly. (once you have established that all is good above move on.

5. make sure the usb cable is plugged in securely and has a good connection.
if all of this is good and you still cant get it to work, you may want to take it in to a computer shop and have one of the tech. look at it.

Hi again m8.

Yep, my m8 had a few teathing problems with this setup but he was using XP.

Firstly as mentioned have u installed nero or sumfing similar with correct aspi drivers on it to recognise the writer.

Is there any recognition at all? does it come up as a cdrom drive?

Try pluggin it into a usb 1 port on yr laptop an see if that recognises it.

I would suspcet the pci to usb2 adapter as my m8 had a lot of problems with his.

Regards

i am not possitive but if i'm not mistaken, a usb1 connection will underbuffer , cause the transfer rate is too slow, causing you to make a coaster.
coaster = set it on the coffee table and put drinks on it...lol
(unsuccessful backup)
for dvd's using an external drive, i think you need a good usb2 connection to keep up with the amount of data transferred.
there are others in the forum that may have more experience in this area. anyone want to add to this???

Duh!!!!!!!!!!!! I wasn't suggesting that he use it in the USB 1 port......Simply that he plug it in and see if win98se will recognise the drive.
