? about a hard drive

i bought i 160 gig hard drive off ebay for 120$ shiped its a 7200 rpm i payed the guy and stuff then about 3 days later he said he bumb his table and the hard drive hit the floor and broke so he said he would send it off with a RMA and get me another which would take 2 weeks or he could ship me a faster one that he had so i told him to ship the faster one well i got it today it shows on the stats to be 160 gb but when i installed it it only shows 127 gb i dont know if he switched them or if its the way its fomatted and i know it should have at least 156 gb with a full formatt im loseing like 30 gigs i dont know if the buyer got over on me or what and i payed useing a money order cause he did not accept paypal with uncofrimed address :( so i guess i will take my losses and stick with what i have i got this 127 gb and also a 80 gb so this gives me alot of space i like to put my ps2 games on the hd and i dont have to read them ever time i need to make a backup :)

To access the full capacity of a drive larger than 137GB you must do one of the following:

1) Use an ATA PCI Card
2) Use Windows Home/Professional XP SP1 or Win 2000 SP3
3) Install new chipset drivers

i installed a mass storge card on my pci slot is that what u mean by #1. so i need to hook up the hd to that instead of the motherboard it self and do i need to use the floopy disk that came with the mass storge card cause i just leted windows do the install and i got win xp pro im not sure if its sp1 or not

EVOEvo 24-09-2003 06:16

i got the ata card installed but when i goto load the disk it gives me some carp about not able to find hard disk and wont load so i dont know what to do i uninstalled and reinstalled no luck how do i go about getting win xp sp1 or updateing my boiso chip set

gh0sth@cker 24-09-2003 06:57

You can get SP1 from www.microsoft.com

EVOEvo 24-09-2003 22:03

would i have to reformatt the hd aftr i get sp1 or leave it the same cause i got 76 gigs used just in ps2 games now and would h8 to lose them all

EVOEvo 25-09-2003 21:27

right now im working on getting sp1 that sucker is huge 125 mb and im only connecting at 28 kbs :( i gave up getting it from the web site i will leave it on all night and it will download then my net will screw up and d/c for some gay reason then it reconnects and i will have to start all over again so im getting it off kazaa at least i can resume the d/l from there :)

gh0sth@cker 26-09-2003 03:08

If you are on a slow connection then you should use a download manager which will resume your file when it fails.

EVOEvo 26-09-2003 07:06

whats a good program to use to resum files i use to have some godzilla one i think it was gozilla or something it will resum files but that was along time ago

gh0sth@cker 26-09-2003 10:52

I haven't had one in a long time. I think Gozilla was filled with adware and spyware. Just try giving www.downloads.com a search.

EVOEvo 26-09-2003 23:28

i finaly got sp1 downloaded but it still didnt fix the problem still only shows 127 GB  that was a waste of 3 day d/l i dont know what to do the disk that came with it says some crap about not begin able to find the hard disk and i got the ATA card installed but that dose nothing this is a bunch of BS just to get a hard drive to work i guess i will have to try # 3) Install new chipset drivers:mad:

gh0sth@cker 27-09-2003 04:09

Try checking the model number of the hard drive to see if it really is just 120GB or if it's as claimed.

EVOEvo 27-09-2003 07:10

on the hd its self it says 160 gb and when i load my pc the mass storge card it says on there WD ultra hard drive found 149 gb when it dose the hd and cd rom checks is were i see this which i belive it would be 149 cause like my 80 gig hd i only get to use 76 gigs it keeps a few gigs extra for something u dont think i would have to reformatt it to show all the gigs if i use windows formatt it only lets it formatt to 127 and only in nstc formatt so i dont know what to do i guess im stuck with a 127 gig :(

EMPiRE 27-09-2003 22:32

Always keep in mind that in reallife 1GB = 1024 MB = 1024*1024*1024 bytes

A harddisk manufacturer counts differently (in his favor) as he is telling you that 1GB = 1000 MB = 1000*1000*1000 bytes

So a 160GB harddisk really is 160.000.000/(1024*1024*1024)=149GB

This problem was not that big when the drives where 20GB, then you could only use about 18GB. You where then only missing 2GB but as the drives are getting bigger the difference is also getting bigger. This is why there is a lawsuit going on right now as they think that they are being ripped of (and they anf you are!)

I am not sure which hardware you are currently using. But do not use the format command, instead goto your "Computer management" and create & format the partition. This should give you the 149GB

EVOEvo 28-09-2003 08:10

how do i go about getting to (Computer management) is this in win xp or do i goto dos
