Are mod chips bad for your ps2?

I have heard it recks up the laser after a while

The only mod chips that harm your ps2 are Neos. Everything else is fine. Playing backups does cause more wear on your laser than originals do, but using high quality discs such as Ritek and Verbatim will prolong your laser's life.
