havent been able to install MOH:spearhead for 6 months (Reg code error)

I've been trying to install MOH: Spearhead forever, but i keepgetting that reg code error.

-for those of you that dont know what it is, dont bother coming here and trying to harass me about copying the game, it is not a security error.

I've tried everything i can think of, and i've even searched the forums.

I uinstalled and the updated to new drivers (beyond the 41.09's that were the broke ones).

I stopped whatever programs win2k would let me in the task manager.

I dled MSCONFIG and ran it to stop the one instance of RUNDLL32 (and one of RUNDLL16).

I checked regedit to see if the code was correct and it the 200 one was there. There was ALSO a 130 one but i tried deleting that and the install still wouldnt work.

After all this the game still would give me that error and i must say it's the dumbest thing ever. I have never had pretty much any problems installing any games on my computer and then i get the worst one that wont even be fixed when i try. Can anyone give me any more input or solutions to this problem? it would be very appreciated.

edit:
WHEW! i finaly got that posted, that was the fifth time i wrote that post, and it was signifigantly longer when i started, but the damn forum wouldnt post it and i kept losing it, whatever thoughm it gets the point across fine

Well, you see, our problem is that the error you get is almost always a warez issue. People who get it either have a warez version of MOH:AA or spearhead most of the time. Now IF you indeed have a fully legal version of both, then I'm interested to hear if ANYONE either knows how to solve it, or has the same problem. Note that you have to have legal versions for BOTH, if not then don't bother to post. So first let's get the facts straight : you do have original discs for both, spin ?

spin 14-09-2003 12:10

in all honesty, early on, no.

but currently i do. See, when i first encountered the issue, i wanted to fix it regardless, the idea of such a problem not being fixable by practical means pissed me off. After i found little help on the EA forums, i decided to see if indeed getting a legit disc really did make a difference (although no one EVER said this was a warez issue) and it didn't.

just cirous though, i thought the reg. code error, happenened to anyone though for reasons releated to conflicts with the rundll and nview applications. Where/what/why/how is it a problem that specifically a copied version would have?

edit:

i just thought of something i havent thought of doing before. Does the DEMO for spearhead require allied assault to be installed? because if it does then i could try installing that.

But if it's standalone i dont think it would be similar enough to installing the full version, and it working may not surpise me.

Hi...i had a problem with MOHAA not re-installing...it was the fact that after the original removel it left a header in my ADD/REMOVE section of the control panel that would`nt shift no matter what i did....I found a tool called "removal 30" which did the trick and MOHAA now installs ok.

Hope this helps

but that has nothing to do with my problem. Allied Assault is already installed, i'm not trying it uninstall anything! i'm not trying to reinstall anything either.

I'm trying to INSTALL MEDAL OF HONOR SPEARHEAD.

thanks anyway though.

RincewindTheWiz 14-09-2003 14:28

Can you give the exact error message you're getting ? Just the text is sufficient, but try to give us the exact text. Have you tried uninstalling everything, installing MOH:AA (do not apply any patch or crack) and then installing Spearhead ?

spin 14-09-2003 14:48

"The registration number was not correct. Installation cannot conitnue".

Did i try reinstalling Medal Of Honor with no patches? possibly.

Do you think it's Medal Of Honor Allied Assault that's the problem?

BTW, could you clarify what you said about a warez copy being the cause of the registration code error? I was under the impression that it could happen to anyone.

some of my friends also had/have warez copies of allied assault, and they would like to know if they should buy the legit versions too to fix this like i did (they're hesitant because i did it and it didnt fix the problem, so i my curiosity was peaked when you said people get it simply because they're using a warezed copy of AA or spearhead...).

Ah yes, now I remember. The only other problem with SpearHead. I see you were trying to shutdown rundll32.exe, that's the solution as far as I know for that specific error. Can you shutdown every instance of rundll32.exe ? Also, can you access the control panel of the card in Display Settings ? I know that going from 3x.xx drivers to 4x.xx drivers tends to leave around a few files that can cause weird problems, have you tried a Detonator Destroyer that deletes these leftover files ? Oh, and make sure rundll32.exe is REALLY not running, lots of programs that use rundll32.exe tend to reactivate that entry in msconfig whenever you disble it. Have you tried scanning for spyware ? I recommend this one. I'm going to sleep now, more suggestions tomorrow....

spin 14-09-2003 23:58

well, alot of the question you asked me were answered in my first post.

But, from what MSCONFIG showed me, i only had one instance of rundll32 running and i stopped it, and regardless, like i said, the drivers are of the newer brand that should not be affected by this issue anyway (beyond 41.09) wich i DID upgrade to by uninstalling the previous drivers first (i dont always do that though). But yes, i can access my cards controll panel anyway and all the files listed are up to date

Also, i beleive i TRIED to use detonator destroyer, but i dont think it was released for win2k yet. If it was, then i may have used it.

Spyware? I have ad-aware 6, but i havent done a full scan for a while (although i did a "quick scan" a couple weeks ago and dumped some stuff from that) so i could try that, but do you really think spyware is causing rundll32 to run after i start windows up? I dunno.

To address one last thing you mentioned, am i SURE rundll32 didnt reactivate on startup? No, i'm not, how would i check that (as i dont see it in the taskmanager, and i've NEVER seen nview running regardless). Hell, i dont even know if the Msconfig program is doing it's job, wich is where i unchecked rundll32 to stop on startup. (wich i downloaded btw, i AM running win2k, wich doesnt normally have msconfig....wich for a while pissed me off because i couldnt do that common solution).

i'll let that sink in for ya (since the error is obviously still here, it's possible that rundll32 didnt go away like it should but i dont know how to check that) and in the meantime will try and find time to do a full spyware scan.

kejot 16-09-2003 05:08

changing to original disks wont cure your problem if you installed with the 5000 ********** number as the registry entries are incorrect, you also have to apply the patches to install spearhead (which is when you have to change the registry entry to 200)
best to regedit all MOHAA entries and reinstall with the new disks

spin 16-09-2003 08:10

and what part of that did i not do? I installed MOH and i checked regedit to make sure the correct number was there, and it is patched up to date.

spin 16-09-2003 15:06

oh yeah, by the way. I just did a full spyware scan, caught some stuff too (usually is just harmless crap though) but it didnt fix anything :(

RincewindTheWiz 16-09-2003 15:35

Some spyware and virusses use rundll32.exe once in a while, other than that I don't really know what to suggest anymore. Except the obvious stuff : reinstall MOHAA, but don't patch and then try to install SpearHead. You probably already tried this, so maybe you can try reinstalling Windows. I know it sucks and isn't exactly a high tech solution, but for me reinstalling my year old XP installation solved THREE weird problems I was having. It's worth a shot. Or maybe you could try going back to 3x.xx detonator drivers ? Also might help. I can only suggest possibilities, but I would try them all out, if only to scrap them as possible causes.

spin 16-09-2003 16:18

i beleive i already tried rolling back the drivers to the 3x.xx series.

Anyhoo, i really would rather not reinstall windows or reformat just to get a game with a really lame install bug to work, as this is the only game i've ever encountered that just wont install.

I could try reinstalling MOH unpatched, i dont think i did that yet, but i also dont think it will fix it.

By the way, at a certain point, when you realized what i was having problems with, did it no longer become relevant that the problem could be caused by warez CD's? Because my friends have the same issue pretty much, and they were waiting to see if my buying the legit cd's fixed the problem, otherwise they sure as heck wont go out and by a disc that's potentially useless.

Due to warez talk creeping into this thread and Rincewind offering all the help he can, I'm closing this one. Speak to the people at the official EA Forums about it...
