Copyright Control?
 

Hi,

I have just noticed that recent CD's I have brought have a protection called "Copyright Control", what sort of protection is this, and is it possible to make working back-ups of CD's using this form of protection.

Never heard of this protection :confused:

First things first: using clonyxxl OR nero cdspeed (select 'surface scandisk'), scan the CD for bad sectors.

Then run BWA builder on it to test for hardware protection, ie. density variations.

Give us an example of a CD-title thus protected (btw. is it audio? data?)

The two latest audio CD's I have with it on are The Darkness and The Kings of Leon.

Also when you try to play these CD's in a computer CD drive, you cant actually "play" the tracks, it gives you a player and plays low quality versions, so if you try and explore the CD in explorer you cant see the tracks, just this player file.

Have you scanned the cds for audio tracks? Sometimes they put in a data track which fools the OS to only see the data tracks and not the audio part...(pretty lame and simple to defeat)

Well, if you use Clonecd or Alcohol 120% and trying to read the disc you might get this info:

Session 01: Track Mode

01 Audio
02 Audio
Session 02 03 Mode 2 Form 1


Just read the first session.

To make a 1.1 copy use clone cd and copy as multimedia cd, to make a cd that will play on a pc copy using audio cd setting :D

Yeah the music companies are using dirty tricks now to try to keep you from ripping the audio.

Problem is they're really technically inept, so their attempts are mostly laughable.

um... except for Cactus Datashield 100 & 200 - especially the latest CS100 which seems 2 B an incredibly tough nut to crack :mad: , indeed very few readers can handle it - and only with the latest firmware..

Yeah but:

1. Cactus Datashield discs aren't CD's at all. Philips is winning their case to have all such discs declared NOT CD's, and make them have a big warning sticker on the front saying "won't work in CD players"... because...

2. They don't work in many CD players. Oops!

...in the sense that since they contain invalid Table Of Content and tracks shorter than 4 seconds - amongst other things ? - they don't meet CD standards established by - guess who - Philips (Orange, Pink, or Red Book or something :D )

ARF ARF whata shame, audio protections were designed to be playable in CD players only, and now it turns out some CD readers such as my good ole' Litey can read 'em all - while some players can't!!! :p :p :p

hum, I don't know if customers should lament or rejoice. Even if Philips wins, CD protection manufacturers R likely to find a means of circumventing the court's decision. Giving their discs a name other than 'CD' won't change much: they could call it 'ND' (New Disc) or whatever, this is unlikely to ward off the average buyer - discs are discs after all :(

So manufacturers will keep spawning off increasingly devious protection schemes, and CD software developpers will keep devising new methods for thwarting them. I guess that's what it's all about - the eternal struggle between Good & Evil ..

But hey, unprotected CDs wouldn't be much fun copying, right? :D

No, the thing is that if Philips wins, any disc with protection will have to have a big ol' idiot-sticker on the front that says "this is NOT a CD and WILL NOT play in your CD player".
