DVD Backups "stuttering"

Well I've finally figured out the key to getting my ps2 DVD backups to work, but now something strange happens in every backup DVD I try. During movie sequences in every DVD backup, the scene stutters every few seconds, making them unwatchable. At first I thought I was burning with too many programs active, but that's not the case since I've tried closing everything. It can't be specific games either since this happens in every backup I try. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance :) .

how fast are you burning, what brand of dvds, what program are you using to burn and what chip?

I've been burning at the Minimum speed (which I believe is 1x), using Ritek DVD-Rs, and using RecordNow Max 4.50 to burn them. My chip is a Messiah 2 Pro.

most likely media (exactly what Ritek DVD-R ?) or a dirty laser (try cleaning it with cleaning disc) :)

bighap 09-08-2003 09:38

Yeah if you are using legit Ritek your laser likely needs a cleaning.

Well I've already cleaned my PS2 laser, I didn't think of cleaning my actual burner's laser. Thanks, I'll get back to you with the results.

:( I cleaned both lasers and still the backups stutter during movie sequences. Also, the Ritek DVD-Rs I use are silver on top with purple for the data on the bottom. These should be legit Ritek. So any more ideas?

What version ps2 do you have? Do you let your computer sit while making the image and burning?

cl0ckw0rk1337 09-08-2003 21:44

I have a V7 ps2 (i think...SCPH-39001), and I make sure that my screensaver is disabled and no programs are running in the background whenever I burn. The same is not true for the image though...I will try not doing anything while the image is created.

bighap 09-08-2003 21:47

Yeah it is a v7. Let it sit for everything and see if that helps.

charlie_ps2 09-08-2003 22:21

Normally I favour tne media/laser combination as everyone has so far advised you.

One of the problems with v7 has been that 5% or so of v7s require laser azimuth adjustment - the v7 sometimes come as DVD-R unfriendly. But then I would expect games to skip on FMV as well. Do they?

cl0ckw0rk1337 09-08-2003 22:27

I just tried reading the image while my computer sat and that had no effect. The stuttering still persists...ARGH! :( As for games skipping on FMVs, it's interesting because they skip on any kind of movie sequence, whether it uses the game's engine or is an FMV. Err, just to make sure, FMVs like Final Fantasy movie sequences?

charlie_ps2 09-08-2003 22:55

Does the DVD movie (DVD-R) skip on any one else's PS2 or on a regular DVD player?

cl0ckw0rk1337 09-08-2003 23:25

I don't have any friends that own modded PS2's :(, also I do not understand what you mean by testing it on a DVD Player. I'm sorry if you misunderstood my use of the term "DVD Backup" as in a DVD movie. I meant it as a DVD Backup of a PS2 game.

Then I suggest you perform laser azimuth adjustment on the laser as I explained earlier.
