Closing PS2 case causes problems
 

I'll try to be as brief as possible.

When I place the metal frame back onto the motherboard and screw that goes in the hole in the bottom-right of this picture, the PS2 won't boot. Black screen. Same if I screw in the one directly up and to the left of that hole.

If I leave them semi-loose, no problems. It works all the way until I put the case together and lay it horizontaly. Then it won't boot again.

However, if I place something underneath where the A/V cable goes into the PS2 to raise the components inside a little, it will work.

I've gone back in and soldered everything as low as possble, taking care that the solder doesn't raise when pulling away with the iron. I've made sure that the wires aren't being crushed by where the screws go into the motherboard through the metal frame.

I'm not sure what to do short of keeping the PS2 vertical.

What else in the lower-right area is sensitive? Is there something on the other side that's sensitive?

By the way, the chip is a DMS3.

It's better for the PS2 to be stood up you know - it gets better air flow around the console and the laser gets a better pitch on the disc - not too close and not too far away.

Besides, I remember reading something about vertical PS2s causes scratches on discs.

just cut a little piece of plastic off the plastic piece that seperates the power supply from the metal casing, a modchip sized square, then use black tape to tape it over the mod

then i doubt youll be having problems, it seems like ur mod is grounding out

You should check your connections and make sure they don't touch the metal frame.

You may use black tape to just cover up the soldering points.

Never let the metal case semi-loose while playing games. The metal case is there for a reason... it act as a heatsink.

Tray staggers out, then back in. PS2 won't boot now.
 

I have a v7 PS2 with DMS3 freshly installed.

My original problem is that the PS2 wouldn't boot when the case was together. I fixed that by placing electrical tape on top of each solder point.

Everything was going fine (except that the PS2 has never been able to boot PS2 CD-R backups). Even with the case screwed together.

Then I pop in a PSX CD-R backup to test out. It freezes during the intro and the drive starts making noise. I press eject, and the tray staggers out a little, stops, staggers out a little more, then goes back in. I did this twice. I turned the entire PS2 off and on again, but it won't even boot.

So now I have two problems:
1) PS2 won't boot after strange activity.
2) PS2 has never been able to boot PS2 CD-R backups (these are DVD rips, not full-DVD games). I've tried plenty of them.

I've already checked, re-checked, and triple-checked for bridges on every solder point with a magnifying glass and a multimeter. There are none.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for the black-tape tip. It worked. Now the PS2 boots with the case closed.

However, now there is a new problem (of course. ;>)

Er, NO. That was horizontal PS2's. I can vouch for it too, my mates did it and wrote off his GTA III disc. My PS2 has been permanently stood up too since the 25th of December 2001 and hasn't even touched a disc yet...

And, it may not have been a solution, but it would have worked, ;) LOL!

Anyway, at least you overcome that little problem now.

Alright, I took the PS2 apart, resoldered the CD/DVD wires on the bottom-side of the motherboard so that they were more secure, cleaned the wires up a bit, took off the piece of two-sided tape under the DMS3 (probably what was keeping it from booting when closed), put electrical tape over every solder point, and put it all back together.

Well, the PS2 doesn't freeze anymore, and it boots just fine.

However, it still won't boot my PS2 CD-R backups!

It boots everything else just fine!

Any suggestions on what it might be? Remember, I've already re-soldered the CD/DVD wires (R through W).

By the way, on the BIOS (D through N), I've soldered E through I to the pads in the install diagram, except for wire D. I soldered this directly to the pin. Could this be a problem?
