The virtual drive makes it so when a pc game looks for the CD it finds it. This is great for games where the copy protection is so new that a 1:1 copy is not possible. The downside to this is that it takes up about 700 megs of harddrive space (or however much information is on the game disc.) You can disable the virtual drive in the options menu. There are some other options to the problem that the virtual drive takes up so much hard drive space. Alcohol 120% part way emulates or helps the disc boot for some games. You have to have alchol installed for this type of game disc to boot. This saves hard drive space but you still get a working copy. Alcohol 120% is great for PC games because they have safedisc and securom protection and such, but I would stick to Record now max for PS2 games because PS2 DVD games don't yet have copy protection. ( To my knowledge)
