Chipping a PS2

I hear that if you chip a PS2 that it only lasts about 8mths before it stuffs up.Is this true? I have a V7 PAL PS2.

Total exaggeration, based on ancient chip technology.

The first chips for the PS2 (Neo2.x) reduced the lifespan of your laser. By how much? For some, it died within weeks. For others (such as myself), it stayed working for YEARS.

But modern chips such as Magic, Apple, Messiah, DMS, etc. will have no noticeable effect on the lifespan of your PS2.

except that the laser likes pressed discs better then burned? i dont think any burned discs is as easy to read for the laser as a pressed disc? that will proberbly reduce the lifespan of the laser, but if you use good discs, its well worth it!

Yes of course. Using scratched and old discs ALSO reduces the lifespan of the laser.

Fact is that Sony used the cheapest-ass bargain basement lasers available in these units.

over 200 ps2s modded and about 5 went bad. those were version 1, about 120 of them have messiah 2's installed and not 1 p2 has failed yet. use good media and you will be ok.

the messiah 2s have been installed for about 6 months now, the others have neo 2.2, neo 2.5, and neo 2.6. those systems range from 1-2 years old.;)

Yep. Certain versions held up better.

Also, are these people using DVD copies or CD copies? I find that CD copies don't hurt the machine NEARLY as much as DVD copies do.
