Macrovision® Launches SafeDisc® Copy-Protection for Mac OS X
Available to Mac ISVs Worldwide
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — May 15, 2002 — Macrovision Corporation (Nasdaq: MVSN), the world’s leading provider of digital rights management (“DRM”) and copy protection technologies, today announced the availability of SafeDisc® for Mac OS X. Macrovision has now completed the porting of its SafeDisc and SafeCast™ “DRM” product suite to the Mac OS X environment. “The huge threat to software publishers’ business from unauthorized copying is consistent across many operating platforms. SafeDisc not only provides Mac developers and publishers with a secure means to protect their CD-ROM content, it also increases sales revenues and can reduce product returns to resellers from unauthorized copiers,” said Steve Weinstein, executive vice president of Macrovision’s Entertainment Group. With over 200 million software CDs manufactured using SafeDisc, Macrovision’s copy protection solution has established itself as the market leader and a de facto standard in CD-ROM copy protection. SafeDisc technology is easy to apply by the publisher and is completely transparent to the consumer. About SafeDisc for Mac OS X SafeDisc is a software-based solution that does not require any changes to the publisher’s application code and is compatible with standard PC or Mac environments and CD-ROM hardware. It is comprised of authenticating digital signatures embedded on the optical disc, an encryption wrapper, and various anti-hacking technologies that secure the optical disc executable. The patented SafeDisc digital signatures are added to each original disc during the mastering/replication process and prevent copying by standard CD-R drives. SafeDisc is comprised of three main feature-modules: • An encrypted wrapper, using the industry-proven SafeDisc Toolkit. • Anti-hacking software, which is added at the time of encrypting the application. This anti-hacking technology prevents hackers from de-bugging the software or reverse-engineering the product. • A digital signature, which is added at the time of mastering and is required to decrypt and run the application. About Macrovision Macrovision develops and markets digital rights management (“DRM”), copy protection and electronic license management technologies for the consumer software, enterprise software, home video and music industries. Macrovision’s copy control and DRM solutions for consumer software enable publishers to develop, distribute, and promote their products securely while facilitating flexible licensing options for consumers. Macrovision has its corporate headquarters in Santa Clara, California, with international offices in London, Frankfurt, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, Honk Kong, Taipei and Seoul.
