Question about replacing Neo 2.2 with Messiah Pro 2 Chip

I have an older version PS2 (version 4) with a Neo 2.2 MOD chip installed. I have been using the swap method with the game shark cd for years and now decided to buy the Messiah Pro 2 MOD Chip so that I don't have to hassle with the swapping. I'm use to soldering the Neo and others PS1 chips with no problem but the instructions for the PS2 MOD chip at Messiah's website ask for using flux, solder paste, de-soldering braid, safety razor blade, blue tack and glue. My question is two fold. Has anyone installed this type of chip? If so, how difficult was it and do I need all of these things? And two, can I install the Messiah 2 chip after the Neo 2.2 has been installed? I heard rumors that the laser gets affected and I may need to purchase a need laser or may have to calibrate it or even install it in a new console.

thx

1 the install
If you are experienced in soldering you should be ok take your time and follow the instructions double check every thing
the use of flux makes it easier to get a good solder joint to the legs of the ic's less time spent with the heat on the better for the chips

2 the neo 2.2
It is likley that after fitting your new chip the console may not play dvd-r this is due to the wear caused to the laser by the 2.2
you may be ok but after a years use i think a new laser may be required they are fairly easy to fit but getting hold of one is not so easy

good luck

does the neo2 have a cap on pin 2? if yes your laser should be ok

if no its most likely dieing

a good test is to try playing dvdr movies

if they play then dvdr games should play

if they dont forget it ps2 games dvdr will not boot

v4 my guess is it will play apple verbs traxdata but fail on cheaper brands

I'm switching. I have a Neo2.5, and I've never used it to run DVD-R's, just CDR's...

But recently I've copied a couple DVD-R games, and I'm already concerned about the laser... AND sick of doing double-swaps to get the games running.

I've never had a problem modding anything using standard solder and double-sided sticky tape. HOWEVER, the flux is a GOOD thing to have, especially for those itty bitty IC legs. And I wouldn't solder ANYTHING commercial without a good desoldering braid. Yikes!

Even with a new laser in the version 4 it ain't that good. I installed a messiah 2 into my m8's version 4 which previously had a neo2.2 in it.

It started by completely ignoring dvd-r so I recalibrated the laser. This gave some limited sucess but on games like GTA Vice City it would freeze and wouldn't touch 'the getaway'.

We stuck a reconditioned laser in ( apparently there is no such thing as a new laser unless u are getting a guarentee repair from sony) and this is okay but still get the odd freeze on GTA Vice and still a bit picky about some games.

I've got a version 5 and a version 7 and have never had any problems reading anything, so my advice, sell yr PS2 and get a second hand version 5,6,7 and messiah that one. Will save u a lot of future problems.

If u do stick with the version 4 then always use top quality dvd-r media like traxdata, dvdmaster or ritek deep purple and you'll have the best chance of sucess.

Good luck!!
