8 Gig DVD???!!!
Just bought a DVD+RW (Ricoh one)...But, I naturally have some problems!
I own a DJing DVD, featuring Qbert. This DVD only works about 20% of the time (to play), and 80% of the time it crashes. I have tried winME and WinXP, and various DVD playing proggies...(WinXP Media player seems to work the most!). I dont know why it usually fails, but it seems to be a reading problem, ie it reads too slow. When it does work, it usually jerks alot. Strange thing is, the DVD is listed as having over 8 gigs of data! Again, winME and winXP sais this, and a DVD copy using Nero creates an 8 gig image file.....(which naturally doesnt fit onto the blank). HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? I have tried to rip this video. Im new to all this, and havent really had the time to figure it all out yet. But when I try DVDRipper, it works up to info file 25. Then its "locked" (no idea what this means). There are about 48 inf files, as there are about 48 scenes. Also, the DVD seems to be in a strange format. It has 4 camera angles. It is NOT region encoded. And its designed to continuously loop most of the chapters indefinately until you hit forward. Any ideas on how to copy it, or get it to play? Thanx all in advance, Joules |
Dvd media that is used for movies is usually pressed on what is called dvd9, or dual layered. The blank media used in dvd burners is dvd5. Naturally a movie won't fit onto one disc. There are several pregrams you can use to burn the dvd. The best program is called dvdxcopy. This program allows you to keep true dvd quality. It also has a feature that when burning a damaged disc in a way repairs it.(sounds like you might need this) This program allows you to remove any extra features you might not wan't or care to have. Since most movies are dvd9, this requires splitting to two dvds. But by removing extras, the film might fit onto one disc. Another program is called dvd2one. This program will lower the quality of the movie to allow it to fit onto one disc. I personally use dvdxcopy to keep dvd quality and don't mind using a second $1 disc to fit the movie on. But if you would rather lose quality and use only one disc, use dvd2one. Hope this helps.

Yeah thanx for the help.....
I had no idea that DVD players could read more than 4.6 gigs. I would have thought that DVD plus standard may have addressed this. But I guess the fact remains that getting a product out early is better than getting your product out properly!! (VHS vs Betamax, Win 95 vs OS2! etc.). Will give it a go with the progs u suggested. Hope it works - Have managed to copy proper movies (which required it to be unlocked) but havent had any success with the qbert video yet...fingers crossed as its friggin awesome - on the rare occasions it works! Yup, have a lot to learn, but am getting there (patience was never my strong point). Joules |
