DVD game intro movies skip a bit ...

My ps2 specs are in my signature.

I'm using Ritek DVD-R media. I have no game play problems what so ever. But the intro movies of pretty much all my buck-up games will skip a bit here and there.

Could this be an azimuth issue ? Should I even bother adjusting it, or is the skipping pretty standard with back-ups ?

No. Shouldn't have to put up with skipping. Should get a perfect back-up. Try updating your firmware on your Pioneer104 to version 1.40.

Also try a different media. Traxdata or DVDMaster r pretty good although ritek are meant to be good as well.

Not worth trying to adjust yr laser unless you have an oscilloscope to check the eye pattern as you adjust.

Also try reading the original as slow as possible when making image on HD.

Hope this helps.....

If you are using 2x Riteks and would like to burn at 2x, I wouldn't upgrade to 1.40. 1.40 won't allow you to burn faster than 1x with Ritek. Stick with 1.31. I would try upgrading to RecordNow Max 4.5.

you could try cleaning your laser with a cleaning disc (one with little brushes on it)
just a suggestion...

Unfortunatly, I couldn't get the Pioneer firmware update utilities to work with my drive. I recieve a "Model name of kernel is not matched." error. Here's what the Pioneer site says...

Q. I'm trying to update my DVR-A04/104's firmware but get one of the following messages:

Kernel mismatch

Model name of kernel is not matched. Current FW = NECCI (NEC) or SA (SOTEC)

Improper firmware file :R300101.180 Please use firmware data from NECCI

A. Your DVR-A04/104 drive was not intended for the U.S. market. The DVR-104SA and the DVR-104NECCI are not sold in United States. Click on the appropriate link below to update the firmware in your DVR-A04/104 drive:
Note: There are no instructions with these downloads. The links provide downloadable firmware files only. However, the process is similar to running the standard DVR-A04/104 firmware updater. Instructions for running the standard firmware update are available from the Pioneer High-Speed webpage. Click on "Instructions for Updating Drive".

NEC Japan

SOTEC (Japanese domestic market)

To check the kernel on your drive, refer to the Pioneer High-Speed webpage. Click on "How to Check for Firmware and Drive Model Number"
I don't know which drive I actually have (NEC or SOTEC), if this is the problem to begin with.

Actually, I was refering to the azimuth (angle) adjustment, not the pots. And I always read @ min, and burn @ 1x.

I think I'll give that a try.

I cleaned it last night, and it did seem to help a bit. But I've got an issue with my cleaning disk. It's a Discwasher Digital 2 brush cleaning disk. I pop it in my PS2, hear it spin, and I hear the laser trying to track, but it doesn't recogonize it as an audio disk, which it is.

When I put the disk in my DVD player, there are several tracks for testing out your speakers for polarity, and what not. Not to mention the annoying ass narator.

Update !

I just cleaned my laser again, .. and again... ( I just kept resetting the thing with the cleaning disk in it)

Tony Hawk 4 DVD-R, which was my worst skipping intro game, only had 2 little ticks in the intro. I wouldn't even call them skips.

Never under estimate the power of cleaning your laser lens. Even if your PS2 is brand new ! (mine is only about a month old)
