Which DVD-Recorder should I get?

I'm thinking about buying a DVD-Recorder but I'm not sure which one I should get.

I want to use it to backup xbox games and movies, so the DVDs should play on the xbox and my DVD player.

Could someone help me with DVD - and DVD + ? Which format is better and which'll make it in the future?

Which recorders do you recommend?

i have both formats and can honestley say i recomend dvd-r/rw.
i find that -r/rw are more compatible with more items.
don't get me wrong both are excellent but i would recomend -r/rw.

You can pick up a Sony DRU-500A. Its the first drive to burn both + and - disks. They run about $350 for an internal unit. You can pick them up on ebay for about $300. But if you want to skip the fighting on ebay, check CompUSA, C.City, BestBuys, Staples, ect ect. Or you can even be real lazy and buy it right from Sony, for $350. This way with a drive that burns both + and - disks you can pick rights right for what your trying to do. I'm getting my self one of these and use the burner I have now as a back up.

*All prices in UDS

You can read about this drive on Sony's website: SonyStyle - DRU500A

The sony drive is great I would highly recomend it to anyone thinking about getting a burner. I have made about 60 backups and not a bad one in the bunch.:D

heh, I got that sony burner for christmas (well, haven't recieved it yet) that burns dvd-r/dvd+r and cd's. Damn, it's bean on backorder since christmas.

It's on backorder almost every place around me. So I reccomend getting a it because they seem to be very popular.

rms2001 27-01-2003 14:59

Quall, you could get your money back, and order it right from Sony.

Quall999 27-01-2003 15:24

Accually, I should receive it soon. The place it was ordered from gave an email about 2 weeks ago saying it should recieve 1000 units within the month and there were about 800 backordered last I checked. So, as soon as that shipment comes, I will get it. Praise the day.

Wow, I went onto sony.com and they already have new firmware to put on the dvd-rom. It allows it to burn at 4X speed instead at 2x. As soon as I get the burner, I will d/l and update

Also, I have a question about dvd-burners. Are the burning speeds equivelant to cd burner burning speeds? I mean, does a 1x burn on a cd burner equal the amount of data on a 1x burn of a dvd burner?

What'sit 27-01-2003 16:30

No I dont think the speeds are the same. It takes about 3-4 min. to burn a cd with it.

Quall999 27-01-2003 17:03

Good, because it takes a little more than 20 mins to burn a cd at 1x, so I was thinking that a dvd will take hours at 1x.
Alas, I am at ease.

What'sit 27-01-2003 19:47

Depending on the size of the game it will probobly take at an hour, for a dvd.

rms2001 28-01-2003 02:52

Ummm, I think with DVD burners 2.4x is like 20x in CD speeds. When I burned Splinter Cell at 1x it took 17min, a 2.74GB game.

Also the firmware update is for DVD+R /RW burning at 4x.

Quall999 05-02-2003 14:36

Well, I found out why the dvd burner is backordered everywhere except sony.com. Turns out Sony recalled them all because they rescently developed new firmware to make it burn at 4X speed instead of 2X. I guess $35 more is worth getting it sooner than march 3rd.
