Magic 3 Newbie
Hi I'm totally new to this modding stuff, and wanted to ask a few things.
I want to buy a Magic 3 from Modchip.com. Are there any things I need in addition to place it in my console, or are those things included in the package? If I have no experience at all, with putting MOD-chips in a console(i know how to put a PC together though) will it work out fine...or will I just mess up my PS2? With that thing, can I play Imports & Backups? Will it work with every PS2 console? hmmm... that was it, I think... yea so thx in advance people! |
Don't do it. I repeat, don't do it.
I had installed 2 neo 2.5 chips before, so I figured I'd give the magic 3 a wirl. It was a very daunting task, taking me nearly 2-3 hours to complete. If you read my other posts, you'll notice that after several days of having the chip, I still can't get a dvd backup to work. Whether or not the problem is in my install, I'll never know. But I'm taking the magic 3 out right now. If you buy a mod chip, have it installed by a pro, period. |
Well I'll try it anyways ^_^.
But did you get it from Modchip? And did they give you an instruction-booklet...or where can i get one? |
No, I bought it from www.gocybershop.ca
They sold me a clone though, so I'm trying to return it for a refund. They had instructions on their site, as do alot of modchip sites. If you want to install yourself, go right ahead. I hope you like soldering, because your about to get a crash course in it. |

I suggest the same thing, If you are not experience in soldering don't try it. I use to solder circuit boards for audio components and I can tell you from experience that it does not take much to fry a circuit board. If you must do it yourself then I suggest you buy the clip that they are selling now to go with the magic3 chip so you don't have to solder the hard points, but you will still have to do some soldering for a few points, so for the extra price you will have to pay for the clip just pay some more and have it done profesionaly without worries. By the way if you are buying a chip to put it yourself then you will need to find out what is included on the package from whoever you buy it from. you will need 23 wires and soldering equipment.

It is really too much to learn for someone that has no experience modding, especially when you are taking a risk so big you don't want to make a mistake that could cost you the console. Best thing you can do is keep reading threads on this forum about installing modchips and see if you are willing to try it

They are selling a clip with it?
More info please:D . |
Where can I get that clip...didn't see it anywhere...

Magic3
Some places might be calling it Magic 3.5
I got my chip without the clip from www.chipzone.com they are expensive there so you might want to try other places, i just have good history with them, they also sell the clip and the chip together with wires needed included, There are also some people in this forum that sell the chip, i don't know if they also sell the clip but you can ask them or they might even reply to this post if you are lucky, hehe. But definetly check that clip out if you are going to decide to do it yourself. I will warn you thou i did not purchase my chip with the clip so I cannot bouch for it. But if the specs are correct it should make the soldering more easier so check it out |
Thx...I guess i'll try that site...how fast did you get yours?
(from this site of course...) Oh and where do you live? |
1 more thing how can i check which mainboard version i got....well i can post my number here and you tell me...
So... PAL SCPH 35004 |
modchip 3.5
Hey, the modchip 3.5 comes with the clip...i believe....i've ordered one too back on the 19th (from modchip.com)but it still hasn't arrived, when it does i'll let you know. As for your version, if you go back to modchip....there is lots of info there to determine your version. I recommend going back to their website and following their directions. For the soldering....the 3.5 has only 9 wires to solder but as previously mentioned soldering can mess up your ps2 pretty easy. Modchip has a list of recommendations..watts for the iron, size of tip for it, type of solder and they list what's included with your order too(for example they include the solder). But if you've never soldered before or only rarely, get someone with more experience.

Thx!
I'll buy the 3.5, because I have a v4 mainboard, which I got to know on Modchip.com. Anyways...with the clip, do I still have to do soldering IN the PS2. |
Magic3.5
Yes you will, referring back to what cmdrtrew said, you will need to solder 9 points. With out the clip you would have had to solder 23. The good thing about the clip is not only the little number of points that you have to solder, but also the fact that the clip mounts on top of the Bios chip in your PS2. Which means you won't have to solder wires to this bios chip which are the hardest points to solder because they are really close to each other. So the rest of the 9 points you have to solder are not nearly as hard as the other ones you don't have to solder because you got the clip

I went into the modchip.com site and if you click on the "order" the 3.5, then in the top right hand side of your screen there should be a blue box with installation....installed....etc.... in it. I clicked on installation and it brings up a diagram of where the wires go, looks like there still is soldering on the board itself. If you really want to do it yourself, buy a cheap $5 or $10 stereo from a pawnshop or where ever, take the cover off so you can see the electronic components, turn it on and listen to the sound quality, turn it off, disconnect the power, and desolder one component on it's board. Then resolder it back in, reconnect power, turn it on and listen to the quality of the sound. Do this 15 to 20 times for practice. If you fry something or it no longer works, finish practicing, get another, do it again until you don't fry it or trash the sound. If you can (take the pebble from my hand grasshopper...haha) remove and replace 10 components and it works fine after....i'd do the modchip.
