Problem with lost data on CDRW... Help please

Sorry this is a bit long.. I just wanted to explain it throughly.

I have a Plexwriter 8/4/32 and Easy CD creator 5.

I have 50+ CDR and CDRWs burned. The cdrws I use for things that change.

Today I went to access one of my cdrw's and the title comes up as UDFREADER under my D: drive instead of MYDOCSA as I had it Named. Also instead of 500 MB of items It only list udfreader. It doesn't show anything else. It does show that 500 MB of space is taken up in the properties though.

CDRW has no scratches or dirt or anything on it. I dout its ever been touched with my fingers as I'm real paticular with them.

I have accessed this CDRW a dozen times.. the last being just a few days ago.

I have had this happen one other time in the past (three months ago) and I never could figure out what happen.

**I tried doing Scandisk under Easy CD creator and all it did after 40 mins+ of checking the CD was burn 500 MB of files to my HD drive in *.rec format. The files are listed like SD000001.rec through SD000562.rec. It then ask me if I wanted to format the drive to make it work again. I of course said no! I'm not sure what I'm suppose to do with the *.rec files as Easy CD creator doesn't say.

I just can't afford to loose thousands of hours of work. Thats what backing up is for right?.. I mean my hard drive appears to be a better backup than a disk. If this CDRW is really bad and I can't recover my files.. I recieved no warning just like a few months ago. There was no time to backup my backup??

I always do research when buying products. I chose Plextor because they were suppose to be one of the best. I then chose one of the CD and CDRW media they recommend to use, and the software they also recommend.

>>>>My first question: Is there anyway to recover the files off the CD and what do I do with the *.rec files?

>>>>My Second question is what can I do to back up files without loosing data like this? I mean is there a way with todays technology to save files? For instance... What program do any of you recommend?, What writer? (I just bought a Lite-on for my wife and it was highly recommended also), What media?...

Any help on this would really be appricated.
Thanks
