Picking a new modchip
Ok let me start off to say I have a v5 with a solderless modchip. I got it b/c it was easy to install, now I’m getting sick of swapping disks just to play my backups. I have now decided to install a no swap modchip now. I would like to know witch is the best one to go with and witch one has the least probs with backups.
Also where can I find a step by step guide on how to get to the main board? When I installed my other modchip, it didn’t look like the main board was easy to get to. |
people who say Magic3 are fools, Messiah2 all the way...
Charlie_PS2 or Dust2Dust can hook you up (very reliable and helpful chaps) |
For what its worth, I don't agree.
1) The Magic3 (or Apple2) will both play all games on the market right now. (The mods on this forum themselves did a review of them and gave them 100%). The Messiah2 has a couple of things that the Magic3 and Apple2 don't have, including being able to boot using any button (rather than having to use the 'reset' button on the other 2 chips) and a deactivation mode (which I think the A2 and M3 have anyway). But those are - in my opinion - very minor. 2) The mods here are biased towards the Messiah2 for a couple of reasons (both financial (see the referrals to Charlie_PS2 their services basically everywhere on this forum) and moral (since the M2 arguably came up with most innovations found in Magic3 and A2 chips)). For that reason, you'll see a lot more Messiah2 info than the others. 3) Price. You can - literally - buy 2 Magic3 or Apple2 chips for the cost of the Messiah2 in some places. To me, that's gouging, and it's only helped out by people who are making a higher profit on a more expensive chip than a lower one. I installed 2 Apple2 mods myself and have them running just fine. They play my games - I don't need to patch, do special copy techniques, nothing. So why would I spend $30 extra per chip? I've got a buddy with the Magic3, and he's in the same boat - everything works fine. |
well u got a point but 30$ can be alot when u need it but messiah is a better chip than magic
|
Bottom line - it plays all the games, the boot procedure really isn't that different, installation is basically the same - at like half the cost.
50/10 - you pay 50% extra for something that's 10% better. If you've got the 50% extra kicking around, you won't regret it. Me, I'd rather buy an extra 50 CDRs. ;) |
Just wondering where you are buying a Magic 3 for half of what the Messiah 2 cost?
The Messiah 2 is $68.00 and I haven't seen a Magic 3 for $34.00.. (Sorry had $38.00 originally) I've got 2 more PS2's coming, so I may get a Magic 3 for testing alongside with my Messiah 2..... I just personally like the Messiah line better.... |
Apple2 is $39 at extreme-mods.com. Magic3 is $43 at ps2cd.com.
Okay, not HALF, but pretty damned close. ;) |
you can get the magic 2 w/ clip for 60 so that a better deal than messiah 2 cuz it makes it only 8 wires

I'm curious about the Apple2.... I haven't seen any reports on it.... You got anymore info on it.....So I could update my boot procedures post (or does it boot the same as the original apple) Quote:

They call it an Apple Mini. If its a great chip then why are they selling it for $10 less than the Apple? They don't specify anything on it different than the original Apple except that it is universal. Don't buy anything new until more is known about it.
|
evolutionmods.com has v.7 magic2 for $25 and magic3 $39 and shipping is included.
p.s. xboxps3gba where can i get that chip plus clip for $60? |
The Apple mini is a clone of the Magic3, basically. So, the boot procedures will be the same.
Why's it cheaper? Well, because it's a clone. :) There are a few people selling those now - moddedunits.com, extreme-mods, etc, etc. Again, they work just fine. |
clones mess up alot
|
Have you tried one yourself Canuck or heard of anybody else having one?
|
I installed 2 Apple Mini chips myself and they're running just fine.
Sorry - I've been saying Apple2 in the forum, when I meant Apple Mini. |
