Newbie burning issues... please help me out
Ok here's what i got.
I've been browsing around, looking up info on backing up PC games, so i decided to test this out. I pulled out a game of mine and fired up ClonyXXL to determine the protection type. I put the disk in my CD-RW drive, and scanned the disk. It popped up two Skulls and said "SafeDisc Old". Next to it, a box was checked that said "Bad Sectors". So i figured "Cool, it says it's easy to copy, lets do it!". I saved a profile named test.cpp, and opened CloneCD 4.0.1.3. I chose my CD-RW drive, picked the test.cpp profile and clicked start. Unfortunately... i don't think this worked. The ClonyXXL settings apparently didn't work, because in my CloneCd log, i got MANY "failed to read sector" errors. ClonyXXL said it was easy to backup... what's the deal? Thanks for any info! |
Read the FAQ, the bad sectors from sectors ~800-10000 are normal as this is just the copy protection.

Yeah, you're right... sorry stupid mistake by me.
But... i have encountered other errors. When i tried running the image through Daemon Tools to see if the image file worked, the game started to load, but was missing a file. If things worked correctly in CloneCd... it's supposed to make a 1:1 copy right? so why do i have a missing file? Right now, i'm checking the real disc to see if the same error occurs with the original, but i don't think it does. Thanks |
Try making the image again at a slower speed. The original may be scratched. What error messege do you receive.

burning issues
Ok... my bad... again
The same error happened with the original game. Apparently some of the files that should have been installed were screwed and that's what was causing the problem. But... now i have another question. How do you determine a successful burn? Example... I made an image of disc1 of Mechwarrior 4... Safedisc old was the protection. Burned to a CD ok. Disc2... Safedisc 2... made image ok, looks like it burned ok... I installed the game using both disks, and was not prompted to "Insert a real disk" message. From the looks of it, my 2 year old CD-RW got the job done, somehow... but is there a way to be sure everything worked ok? Are there anythings to look for in particular? From what i've read, safedisc 2 is a pain, and it all depends on the burner you're using, so actually, i find it hard to believe that my generic CD-RW drive (which came with my 2+ year old compaq) worked. Thanks for the info! |
If it gets past the initial Safedisk check at the beginning of the game then everything should be fine barring abnormalities during the reading/writing process (maybe a file could get corrupted but this is just unlucky).
So it seems you were able to copy Safedisk 2. |
