scph 390001 v4 datecode 1C

i'm about to order the magic2v7 chip for my ps2 v4 1C, but i need to know the jumper settings for the chip and my model ps2.

can anyone help?

charlie_ps2 21-09-2002 01:03

Some v4s need the V4 Magic 2
Some v4Rs need the "R" Magic 2

None need the V7 Magic 2.

What is your:

Serial number Uxx
Barcode Number: PTxx
SCPH designation:

machine #s

serial# U55...
barcode# PT15...
scph# 30001
datecode 1C

this page is why I think my ps2 needs the magic2 v7 chip

charlie_ps2 21-09-2002 10:56

This one usually has BIOS 030 and would then need the Magic 2 V4 chip.

groovster 21-09-2002 16:14

bios 030?

ok, charlie, I'm confused. I've found a ton of sources saying that my version ps2 (v4 with 1c) is one of the stupid exceptions in which the magic 2 v4 will not work in.

how do you tell which bios is in which machine, and how would you use that info to determine which modchip would work?

charlie_ps2 22-09-2002 00:08

The Magic 2 V3 is for BIOS 020
The Magic 2 V4 is for BIOS 030
The Magic 2 R is for BIOS 040
The Magic 2 V7 is for BIOS 050

You can open up the PS2 and look at the BIOS chip and it has 030 or 040 stamped on it.

But we have collected all this data based on the datecode/Uxx/PTxx number and so far this serial is shown to have BIOS 030.

But it does no harm to check - adds to the database.

Incidentally I have an e-mail exchange with china-magic to back up my above definitions in relation to the 1C question.

upon inspection

Ok charlie, sorry to keep bugging...but this is going to drive me nuts until i get a working, modd'd ps2.

I tore apart the ps2 and matched my chip stamps to the china-magic installation maps for the v4 "no gap" magic2 chip.

my bios chip did, however, have the 040 stamp on it...does this mean I need the v4 R magic 2 chip?

charlie_ps2 22-09-2002 23:55

This is a first groovster. The first reported certified U5* PT15 with an 040 BIOS.

Yes, this needs an "R" magic 2 or V5 Clone.

Well done.

jumping the gun...

charlie, i think you're giving credit a little too quick.

-goto http://www.china-magic.com/diagrams/...v4nogap_v4.jpg
-now look between solder points M and N and you will see a 040 on what i think is the bios chip. does this mean the "no gap" version of v4 is actualy v4 R?
-another note, maybe nothing, but on the flipside of the board there is also a chip much the same size with a stamp of "D 011 030 16M", the 030 is what caught my eye. I read something, somewhere about the U5.. 1C being the first in a series to have an anti-something or other, but for the life of me, I can't find the source again. Heard anything along these lines?

charlie_ps2 24-09-2002 13:11

Don't trust the diagrams at that level of detail, Groovster. They get copied from picture to picture.

I've had the e-mail exchange with Mr. Magic 2 some days back and he confirms my mapping of Magic 2 version to BIOS.

The 040 BIOS introduced an additional region check which requires specific patching of the BIOS. Hence the "R" or V5 models.

Anyway, I'm not the hands - on expert with v4s. That information about the other side of the board has thrown me.

As I said i my second post your U5* and PT15 usually has an 030 BIOS and takes a V4 chip. I now don't know how to properly advise you.

Dump it!

conclusion

charlie, you advised me more than i could have hoped. This mod-chip game that we play doesn't have very well defined rules, the other team gets to cheat alot. But I believe that I've found a logical solution to my fix.

Here it goes. The U5 PT15 w/ datecode 1c does have the 040 bios, therefore needing the extra bios patch found in the magicII R chip. Initially, I was thinking I needed the magic2v7, because magic had, at one point, integrated v5/6(R) and v7 into one chip. But as of magic's september 4th news post, magic decided to separate the two lines into two chips, the v5/6 and v7. So now, I simply need to install the v5/6 chip, cross my fingers, and pray to the gods of hacking.

Thanks for the help, charlie. I'm ordering the chip on payday, and will post a message of the verdict.
