backing up back ups!!
 

say for instance that i lose the original game and want to take a back up off a back up, will i be able to just use clonecd to copy 1:1 off the copy even if it needed patching first time, or will i still need to patch the backup image?

Yep. CloneCD will do the trick on a backup.
