Plextor Burners - Compatibility

Gday guys,

i currently have an ACER 161040 which no longer reads sd2 games. I havent had it for long and im not pleased with it. I would like some advice regarding a better unit .. ie... a Plextor.

I was thinking about the equivalent PX-W1610TA. Can any of you guys advise for or against such a purchase ? Im not sure if this burner is capable of reading/writing sd2. Can it ? I noticed the reviews which said that the 241040 can. Also, i suspect this drive will read sub-channel data and work with XP - is this correct ? Any other info or reviews would be greatly appreciated and if you can suggest a reputable online store in Australia where i can get one for a decent price, that would be fantastic.

Thanks guys.

I just bought one, and it has been flawless with everything I've tried to back up so far. I would definitely recommend it. Don't look at any other drives...this is the one you want.

As for Aussie online stores, I don't know any. But I bought mine from dabs.com for only £130 (about £200 in the high street)...they only send to EU countries though so you'll have to shop around.

what burning software were you using? i hear blindwrite can copy some games clonecd cant (i.e. avp2)

kcodd 12-02-2002 21:33

clonecd and a lite-on 12x and 24x are the only sure combo for true 1:1 copys of the latest safedisk2. The 32x I havent tested yet so it may also do the trick.
People just read and every answer will be clear, research before you ask questions. Its like a broken record in this thread!!!!
KC...........

The Lite-on 32x can do it....(sd2 latest)

I haven't read much about the subject yet but I'll dare to ask my question ... :p

Does the Plextor 40x support SD2 ? Or maybe is it just the latest SD2 that it isn't supporting ?
I've checked the SD2 compatible list, and I haven't seen Plextor 40x in it, so I guess it doesn't.
But maybe it's just coz there haven't been much testing about it.
Don't you think it will support latest SD2 in a near future ?

I'm planning on buying either Plextor 24x or Plextor 40x next month (yeah, I'm waiting for having a bit more of money ... just a small problem of cash flow ... :p). I don't think I'd have a problem buying Plextor 40x, it isn't that much expensive (at least in the shop I've checked in). But it would be a bit stupid to buy the latest CD-Writer and see it can't burn the latest protection, when an older burner can. ;)
And the difference of time between a 24x (something around 4 minutes, I guess, to burn a full CD) and a 40x (closing the 2 minutes ? is it possible ? woah) isn't as important as when you had to choose between a 4X (20 minutes) and a 8X (10 minutes)

Thanks for help !

Yeah great help.

At least, I've thanked myself in advance. :p

Anyway, I've read a bit more about the subject ... And I'll take Plextor 40X.

I know how it works a bit ... when I was to buy my current burner (HP 9100), I didn't buy a plextor because it was copying protected CD's. But with the next update of CloneCD, or next Plextor's firmware (don't remember exactly), it could.
Not that my HP isn't great, I've actually made only a few coasters and it worked very good. And still does. but well ... evolution ... R.I.P. dear HP 9100. (lol)
Well, don't worry, it's just my father taking it back, so I'm not gonna burry it a the end of my garden. (:p)

But it seems HP aren't as good as they were in a matter of CD-Writers. And mainly, Plextor are much less expensive than they used to be. Finally, a firm that is understanding us ...

aaaah, if game editors could understand that, we wouldn't have to go into this.

podunkviller 28-02-2002 22:46

liteon 40x is the only burner out there you should give consideration to, at least, ifyou wanted to burn mohaa tomorrow, flawlessly. however, if a superior reputation is what matters to you, get the damned plextor.

please though, dont buy an hp. thats all i ask.

kcodd 28-02-2002 23:21

Good 1 podunkviller, I liked my 9100 for a few years till sd2.5....lol.
About the phillips I guess I went all the way with the extra 5 smackers...lol
Long live my lite-on!
lol...

I wish I could find Liteon 40x here in Belgium.

I'll keep looking though. ;)
