cannot play original PC game

Hi:

My son installed a game from a backup cd.
Now we cannot play/install/or browse our original AOE2 and RA2 games!! The games installed and played without problem before.

The drive seems to be ok -- can read/browse data cd and audio cd. The CDs seem to be okay -- they can be easily browsed on another PC.

What could have happened? What should I do? I have spent a lot of time trying to figure this out. Then I found this forum, hope you folks can help.

Thanks,
yaryar

Have you installed programs such as PlayBackup, Insektors or Daemon Tools as they might be blacklisted

You cannot even browse your RA2 CD?
If you could you should try copying the [RA2CD]\setup folder from any of the CDs to your HD and then install it again. CD still needs to be inserted for installation. Also be sure to download the latest patch from www.westwood.com
I cant help you with AoE2 since i dont own it. :(

gh0sth:
what files should I look for or delete to remove any of these?
I may have downloaded these at some point?

No, I cannot browse it because the drive keeps going on an off but don't see anything in explorer. Explorer only returns after I manually eject the CD! Same in command prompt with dir command.

it should be in the start menu in programes

Now thats strange.
Try to find any of those programs, but i think thats not the reason since RA2 and AoE2 are protected with early versions of Safedisk.
You can also try to put that CDRom into another PC and see if it works there. If not, your CDRom is broken.

RA2 is protected with Safediskv2 (think it was 2.05.xx), AoE2 is protected with Safediskv1.
