Sorry, I know this has been asked may times before but I'm still having problems

I now have a V5 uk PS2. The DVD-r's I have tried so far are Princo, Unbranded, Infinity and Pioneer. The pioneer disk works fine but I have problems with all the other disks (skipping FMV and game freezing). I know others are able to play these disks as I have copied for other people and they work fine. The unit i'm using is only a week old and have tried cleaning the laser.

What am I doing wrong?

Also I've heard that the V5's can rean Datesafe DVD-RW. Have tried but failed with these aswell.

sometimes u just get a bad laser maybe laser adjustment would sort it
i had v4r was only 2 weeks old had messiah in it
worked great but laser was naff even with adjustment could only get it to read pioneer and apple media :(
i take it u r using a03 firmware 1.55 not very good upgrade to 1.68

The firmware is V1.68. Already upgraded.

the ps2's DVD laser is (like 99% of the parts in the ps2) the cheapest crap available, so it has trouble with many dvd-rs. the ones known to work very well are Verbatim and Apple blanks.

I've ordered some Verbatim disks to try. Hope these work better.

Do any adjustments have to be made in order to read the DVD-RW's?

nope worked straight out of the box (PS2 V5), certainly in my case.

hey dusty, charlies other mate tested my V5 with princo and it did work unfortunately when i ordered a batch of 50 princo units I discovered to my horror that out of 7 burnt only one worked! definately think princo has some quality control issues...

but now for something more disturbing... one of my mates found out to his extreme disappointment that a large percentage of his Princo DVD-R are failing to read, they used to work fine, but not any more... which suggests to me that the underlying technology/chemical dye they are using isn't all that stable for long periods.

anyway, i spoke to SVP who supplied me with the DVD-R and although they were happy to replace my Princos with an equivalent *value* of Verbatim DVD-R, they where very clear to stress the difference between compatibility and quality.

I didn't bother explaining to them their media had failed on 3 other DVD drives including the PS2 and could only be read using the Pioneer A03 f/w 1.68. the same backups we're tested using both Verbatim DVD-RW and DVD-R, these worked flawlessly.

dezzzza9995, until the competing DVD-R technologies have matured I shall be steering well clear of generics and lesser known companies. For my money Verbatim's patented Metal ASO compound seems the safest bet, and for a couple of pounds more it won't exactly break the bank :)
