You are lucky not to have put a Neo2.2 in your v3 because it now stands a chance of working well with the Messiah. Neo2.2 shags the laser and then when you install Messiah DVD-Rs won't work and an expensive recalibration exercise has to take place or even laser replacement.

We've installed two PAL v3s and I'm reporting experience. When they left us they were working with DVD-Rs. But it took some work to get there.

If you'rs is unchipped, your chances are high.

Hope that helps and if you want to buy a Messiah/Clone, contact me by email through my profile.

Mine isnt modified yet so do i have a bigger chance that messiah will work on my pal ps2 v3???
I can let it modified in Amsterdam ( thats where i live ) with messiah but it will cost me 250 euro because its a v3

Thank you very much charlie

Yes you have a reasonable chance that DVD-R will play on v3 if you have not yet modded it and you have not played the PS2 to death with original games.

Your 250 Euro for a Messiah + installation is not unreasonable in my view. It takes 3 hours to fit in a v3 and the Messiah doesn't grow on trees!

Hope that helps.

But is the neo 4 for V3 also a good choice???

Arakon 15-03-2002 12:51

neo 4 is crap.
it's expensive, it's hell to solder (44 wires!), and it ONLY does cdr without swap. dvd-r still needs swap, import originals don't work at all.
if you wanna go for a "big" chip, get a messiah. if you want cheap and easy, get a neo 2.2 (but make sure you install the capacitor and resistor).

if dvd-r won't work for you (which is independant from the chip there, btw), lik-sang sells replacement units for 40 bucks.

does is have a bigger risk to modify a ps2 which version is v3???

i heard the laser of the v3 pal ps2 is very weak with dvds???? is this true?

charlie_ps2 16-03-2002 11:59

It is tempting to say yes - the v3 laser is inherently weaker. But it is safer to say that v3's are getting long in the tooth and the laser is weakening thereby. In any case it won't be weak with DVDs only DVD-Rs, which themselves are imperfect oprical reproductions of a DVD.

It is easily replaced (by someone who knows how) and the first step if a DVD-R doesn't play is to clean the lens (no alcohol) and second step is to re-calibrate (know what you are doing).

Arakon

Just a quick question .. what resistor ? I have just installed the NEO 2.2 and i am having problems with PS2 backup boots (PSX is ok) .... I have posted a new thread "NEO2.2 / AR2 Booting Problems"

"get a neo 2.2 (but make sure you install the capacitor and resistor). "

Thanks

Léon

the neo 2.2 sends the scex signal at 5 V, which is above the specs of the components.. a resistor of 220-270 ohm reduces it to a decent level, and will prevent damage to the laser.
if you have problems booting stuff, you might need to go lower in ohm value, tho.. just try out some values to see what works best, I had to use 100 ohm in my ps2.
it's simply soldered between the capacitor and the mainboard point for pin 2.

leon_judge 16-03-2002 23:49

At the moment i have no resistor .. could that be causing me problems ?

thanks

Arakon 17-03-2002 05:59

you should add it, it'll be safer and stop the laser from wearing down too fast.
