My JAP PS2

OK, i bought a JAP ps2 a while ago with a mod chip already installed. I don't know the version of the ps2 or the mod-chip name. My PS2 automaticly ejects shortly after it is turned on. This is how i play back up games. I put the PS2 utilities disc in and when it ejects i swap it for the burnt game. I have only been able to successfully play backup cd games though and the dvd rips that i have tried don't work. Something to do with the TOB being to large and i don't have a copy of DVD Region X and AR2. My friend has just bought a dvd burner so i was wondering what i should do to remedy the situation so i can play dvd games. Can i work out what mod-chip i have and see if it is up to the job of dvdr playing. Should I try and install a new mod-chip? IS there a chance the my PS2 is too old to play back-up dvds? Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance

I've probably got useful news for you on two fronts.

Existing modchip
It's probably the original Modchip.com chip. If it is, you can boot DVD-Rs from any region now. You need a JAP high TOC original DVD Game, like Devil May Cry (you can get that in Comoputer Exchange, London). You boot that and when the tray ejects, you swap in the DVD-R of lower TOC. If the DVD-R is correctly burned and lower TOC, it'll work. I did that for a couple of months. Your laser needs to be in good condition for DVD-Rs.

Ideal solution
The origiachip 1.25 is potentially your best solution. (www.origachip.com).
If you have a 10000 or 15000 (it says which on the back of your PS2) then with this chip installed you can boot import originals (US/PAL) NO SWAP; DVD-Rs and CD-Rs boot using DVD Region X (v1.3 or 1.9( or with AR2 (any version). I recommend DVD REgion X which is free in this month's PSi-2 Magazine

Hope that answers your questions.

Thanks heaps for the info Charlie. Ok, just a few more things...

1. I burn my games by using CDRwin 3.8f. I extract the files to my hard drive and them patch them with the ASA patcher. I have to patch them with the utilities disc v1.01 patch. I then burn it back to cd. Is this the same process i would use to burn dvds?? Do I need to patch them differently or don't they need to be patched at all?

2. I live in Australia so coming across a NTSC copy of devil may cry may be difficult. Is there other NTSC games that can be used instead so i can broden my search?

3. My PS2 is a 15000. I gather this means i can use the origachip 1.25. I went to the web site but they said they were sold out. Is there any where else I can get one?

Ok thats all i can think of for now. Thanks once again.

Oh, one other thing, PSi-2 magazine. Is that a UK magazine cause I don't think i have seen it for sale here in australia. If it is just UK, i'll buy a copy of it from the uk of someone.

ANSWER: Those games will play with the Origachip 1.25. For the future you would use CloneCD to make 1:1 backups of CD games. Your burner has to be fully compatible. The site www.elby.de has the softeare and a compatibility chart. Entries in green on the chart are the ideal solution and for protected games your burner must match that (RAW-DAO+96).

ANSWER: You won't need a high TOC DVD to boot DVD-Rs with Origachip 1.25.

ANSWER: They are sold out of psi-2 already. When you order the Origachip order DVD Region X as well from www.origachip.com
