VCD on PSX

Hello
does anyone know how to play vcd on psx?
do i have to plug something in the back?

as far as I know you have to purchase and additional adapter that attaches to the back, but from what I've heard the video wears down the playstation lense pretty fast, most DVD players play VCD's so I play mine with it.
