How to use an .ACE file

Can anybody please explain how to use an .ACE file. Is it an archive file I'm supposed to extract? And if so, which program should I use.
I'm trying to use a No CD fix for Return To Castle Wolfstein, but the fix consist of an .ACE file: don't know how to use it.
