PS2 DVD Direct Backup...Possible?
I've seen postings from people asking about backing up PS2 DVDs and the answers are always the same...RIP.
However, what I'm asking here is if it's possible to do direct and complete backups of PS2 DVDs. Crazy? Maybe, but let's entertain the thought a little. I was looking around Pricewatch for a DVD-RAM drive and noticed the Toshiba SD-W2002 DVD-RAM drive selling for ~$400. This DVD-RAM drive can burn to 4.7GB discs which I believe is what the PS2 can read (corrections anyone?). The 4.7GB discs sell for around $20ea. I know that this can be a rather expensive venture but let's ignore price for now. Using the Toshiba DVD-RAM drive, some 4.7GB discs, and a DVD burn software (recommendations?), is it possible to completely backup a PS2 DVD for use with a NEO2 modded PS2? If so, how? Also, what are the boot methods required? Gameshark 1.4 boot? EA Method? Thanks in advance...hopefully someone here is as crazy as me. :-) |
Yo, the dvd-ram is different. I'm not sure exactly what the ps2 uses, it could be, but I would do some more investgating before you go doing this. I know that there are like 3 or 4 different dvd writing formats out there right now, some only write in the pits of the dvd, some write in the pits and on the peaks of the groves, some use constant linear velocity and some use constant angular velocity. Can't remember exactly what dvd's use, but I know the do it one the pits and peaks, and i think constant angular velocity. Just do some more research before you invest 400 dollars in the unit on a whim.

Really?
Hoei Sangyo in association with SCEI and Poineer, announced today that they're planning to release the 'DSR-8000dp DVD-R Duplicator,' later this month in Japan. Essentially, the system will allow licensed PlayStation2 developers the opportunity to burn multiple copies of their PS2 CD/DVD games for debugging purposes. In conjunction with the soon to released DPM-88 software, the DSR-8000dp system will interface directly to SCEI's new generator to create multiple CD/DVD's while providing total verification of the completed masters. Game developers can now create 4 CD/DVD disc's with a single master unit, and up to 16 CD/DVD's at once by utilizing a VMI Slave unit. The unit will only be available to licensed PlayStation2 developers in Japan and America, and will retail for approximately 3,600,000 YEN ($34,344.00) Not exactly for home use! |
Pioneer is coming out with a DVD/CDR Burner that they say will burn DVD's that will read in 90 percent of DVD players. If so I believe that the PS2 will be able to read these. It's Pioneer's DVR-A03 Drive. I'm not sure how much the media will cost but the drive will run about $900. Which is a far cry cheaper than 34 Grand. If anybody knows anymore info on this drive and the cost of the DVD-R please post a reply. I know this drive won't copy DVD movies exactly. It won't record the encryption part of the DVD needed to play DVD movies.
Later, Jase Yes I know this is a dupe. I posted this in the wrong topic. Oops. Sorry. |
Hey all,
As from september this year the PHILIPS DVD+RW will be launched for the home consumer. Acording to philips web site we will be able to record soaps and whatever's on T.V. just like we would with our VHS videos. If you want to know more goto there web site and press the record button to go in. www.philips.com Maybe by september our problems could be solved. If it's not that expensive, that is. |
I've done some more looking around and found this:
A perfect copy of the DVD can be made (he used a Pioneer DVR-S201 DVD-RAM drive). However, there is a problem with booting. The GS/AR boot method doesn't work because it uses CD media, not DVD. Anyway, if the game was booted using the original DVD and then swaped with the backup, the game runs with no problems. I have never tried this so I can't personally say if this is true. I did see it posted somewhere else. It looks like there are alot of other people doing research as well. Consider this as general FYI... |
I found out another thing...
I was mistaken on the DVD-RAM assumption. You will need a DVD-R drive with DVD-R media, not DVD-RAM. This brings the price to ~$1000 USD. According to posts from other boards, the PS2 can read DVD-R media. The problem is with booting. |
its no porblem to backup ps2 DVD games.
i do it with nero burning rom 5.5.9.0. ive tried it with both media types DVD+R and DVD-R. for the -R i used the pioneer A04 burner and for the +R i used the ricoh MP5125 A. If you want to play the games you need. PS2 Neo 2.2 Action replay 1.9 (very important) and than use the Double swap trick. For PS2 dvd games there is no copy protection yet. |

Question
If someone will try or reply with an answer it might help all of us. This is about burning PS2 games. If you look in the Help Topics in the Sony "Playstation 2" Master Disc Checker 1.20 or Sony CD\DVD-ROM Recording Unit Controller 1.20 (which came with my downloaded copy of the Sony CD\DVD-ROM Generator 1.20 not from Sony of course) it says that there are a few writers that are compatible with Sony's recording unit controller software for making CD master discs and there is 1 burner that it says that supports DVD-ROM Master Disc Generation. That burner is the PIONEER DVR-S201. If someone owns a PIONEER DVR-S201 e-mail me using one of the links. Otherwise if someone could tell me if you can make copies of games using the PIONEER DVR-S201 burner, the sony software and\or any other burning software? The burned copy has to be able to boot on the PS2 without a modchip, swapping the disc or any other possible way of booting a copied disc. It has to boot on its own without any help. It also has to be an exact copy without any hex editting or ripping. The DVD-R you must use is the one I will tell you near the end of this reply. The DVD-R specification I am giving you is an exact copy from the help menu of the recording unit controller. You must use a DVD-ROM format Playstation 2 game. If you do get it to work please (PLEASE) e-mail me so we can talk (have the name of the game you burned or know someone else burned handy). If you need the software I have you can e-mail me at [email protected] and I will send you the three programs mentioned in my reply in a zip format (.zip). You can also check to see if your disc is recognized as a master disk if you have the right CD or DVD Drive with the Sony "Playstation 2" Master Disc Checker 1.20. Here is the DVD-R media disc stuff you will need if you are going to try
DVD-R Product code DVD-R47PS Recording capacity 4.7GB You must use this DVD-R or the data you e-mail me or post on the site is invalid. (Also where I said the disk must be an exact copy I don't mean it has to look the same on the outside for all you idiots). You must also own the game you copy. I have also heard that there are two versions of the PIONEER DVR-S201. They are 1. a commerical version which is able to copy them perfectly and have the games boot perfectly without any problems and 2. the personal version for home use which I have heard is not able to copy the games perfectly { and have them boot right } [ the burned copy of the game will still work with a modchip] because Pioneer doesn't want Joe Shmoe down the street making perfect copies of dvd's, dvd-rom's and games that work right so he can sell them and make a profit because he paid for 1 copy of the game. Just remember that this information about two versions of the PIONEER DVR-S201 might not be true.) Thank you if you read this and if you only read some of this reply thank you because this is a long reply. (I even thank you if you didn't read half the reply although I don't know why.) If you need software and you think I might have it or you have answers to my questions you can can e-mail me (again I post my e-mail address) at [email protected] [email protected] :D Quote:
