think i have a pre release uk display model............is there a way to get dvd playback activated?

I guess your unit is broken cause I have exact the same model and I can play all dvd's including the multi-region one Crouching Tiger Hidden dragon which doesn't work on some us models.

Where did you buy it from?

If you bought it from a store you should have a warrenty card that came in the box.

Just take it back or phone the number on the warrenty card.
