It sound like you 5552 needs "TWEEKING", on this model there is only one adjustment possible and thats a small suface mount pot on the brown wafer thin ribbon the runs from the laser to the motherboard, just at the to of this ribbon you will see the pot in question, turn it clockwise or anti clockwise to "TWEEK" the laser

BE WARNED. make a mental note of the oiginal position so if it totaly fails you can turn it back (best if you can meter it out, if you have a multi meter available). Also dont use a screw driver to adjust it as you may tear it from the ribbon, light finger pressure should do the job!

Remember only a very small adjustment is nessecary.

Spooky is correct but being a 5xxx it may be time to
a) put a drop of whisky on cotton bud and clean
lense going round in cicles 6 times.
B) Failing that , fit a strip of ally to lazer lense base
to RAISE lense to origanal height.
This always works..unless actual motor under spindle
is playing up..slowing.
There are some good PSX REPAIRE sites about with photos ,step by step.
The last repaire I did this week had a broken
lazer chassis drive spindle, lacked 3 teeth.
Played a game then crashed out ..cause of three teeth.
