Can someone explain me the basics of PSX backups?

Im new to this, so please explain me the following:

1) I have a PSX Stealth V (5) 8-Wire ModChip, what does a Patche (download from megagames) do for me. If I have a mod-chip, do I have to use patches to backup some games. If I have Dino Crisis 2, and I want to back it up, do I need a patch to make it work on my playstation, or is a patch just an optional addon.

2) When you download a patch, and you install it. What does a "trainer" do, does it enhance your game, or does it make the game work. Or is it a cheat of some sort.

a patch is for older mod chips, it removes mod detection, which you dont need since you have a new chip. a trainer is a cheat program.
