Will the Dreamcast be back?

Hi guys ('n gals, if any)!

Dunno about you but I think Sega stopped DC too early. If games' piracy would have been so extended like it's now, DCs would still be in production, don't you think so?

Do you guys think there'll be a DC2 even if they've confirmed they're going out of the scene?

I know PS2 is raising the tops quite high, and XBox is still not in the market but...

I'd pay for a DC2 if it'd beat at least PS2, which does not look like so hard...

Any1?

It's not the proliferation of pirated games that keeps a game console production line healthy. Not even the proliferation of legitimate games keeps it healthy. What keeps it healthy is the continued high-volume SALES of legitimate, original games. They just about break even on the sale of a gaming console. It's not a very profitable endeavour. Where they make their money is on the licensed game sales. Having tons of games out there in the pirate community doesn't put any $$$ in the company's pocket, therefore it doesn't promote the long-term health of the console manufacturer, but rather it hinders it because fewer game discs will be sold because potential buyers are getting pirate copies.

Does that make sense?

Hi again,

I think I disagree... Why PSX One is still alive then? I think there are far more pirate PSX games and PSX mods and stuff like this than DC games, and don't tell me PSX One rules over DC coz I won't believe it.

DC is one of the best consoles (if not the best) prior to the new era (PS2/XBox).

If only DC games piracy would have come before, I'm sure DC would be still living... I really doubt SEGA can make a profit of third party original games (Capcom, Konami, ...) but on sales of the console itself (and its third party accessories may be!).

It's really sad to see Sega going nowhere but software developing when they've ruled the arcade machines for so long now...

And yeah, I'd pay for a DC2 if it every arises ;)

i donīt think that an dc2 comes, but a new interristing thing comes up: the gamecube!
i think it get very interesting how to copy games on this mashine!
yes, the mini DVDīs have an other size then normal medias, but phillips will build an dvd player whith gamecube hardware in it, this one must have an rom, whitch is been able to read normal size discs. and the gamecube has ports for serial plugging and an port for an highspeed connector like the dcīs broadband adapter. :-)
yea wait and see what comes ;D

To many people dismay, there will never be another Sega console produced. Sega has focused on making games.

Timing has always been an anathema for Sega. Master System was relesed after the NES.. And NES simply bombarded the market with games.

Genesis came out at a good time, and was probably their most succesful launch. The only competing system was the TG16.

Sega Saturn and their attempt to CD gaming was marketed about as good as Apple.

The DC, although released at a perfect time, was plagued with horrible releases and overpriced everything.

The only thing the PS2 had going for it was the Sony Playstation name. It is a horrible terrible system that I absolutley dispise.

Xbox will try to win hard core gamers with its muscle and graphics, but I think in the end Nintendo and the GameCube will triumph. PS2 will fade away and cost about $100.

Nintendo has learned many lessons throughout the last two decades, and will produce a quality machine with quality games.

My bet is on the Cube.

THat was what I was trying to say... If the "copy protection" would have been hacked sooner, I'm sure the DC would still be alive.

I personally hate Nintendo except for their Game Boy series, which I love.

For the Nintendo series, I had one of their latest machines in my hands and leaving aside Zelda/Pokemon/Mario series, the rest of games where a 3 on a scale of 10 (being 10 best). The only impression that Nintendo left in the air was that it's a console for Nintendo games only. Old controllers where mostly based on Mario Bros' way of playing rather than focusing on standards.

So I don't think I'm getting a GameCube...

It's probably true that XBox will be too expensive, but hey, it's MS who can lower the price faster than competitors in the same time range...

PS2 is a nice one, but I think Sega should have continued behind the hardware scene...

And this would be true if we could have hacked it before! ;)

Goddam nintendo! I hate nintendo!
Not for their systems, but for their awful faggy childish games!

ALL games that were made specifically for nintendo suck! That is of course with the exception of the SNES, whose games I still more or less adore.

But otherwise I consider the n64 to be the shittiest and most overated console of all time!! They had the most terrible sports licenses ever (nfl quarterback club comes to mind) and the only decent games they had are the ones they stole from the PSX. I dont know why so many people like zelda, it a fruity game, with a subpar plot and ugly graphics. N64 was horrible in all cases, for a console released in '96 (after psx and saturn) theres just no excuse what so ever why its games should be supplied on industry pathetic cartriges.

I personally despise the queer nintendo mascots (mario, kong, banjo, etc.) and all the games they are in are just plain horrid in my opinion. As for pokemon... well, I can understand why little kids like it... since I myself have enjoyed it about a year ago. Other nintendo games like goldeye and perfect dark were considered to be jewels, when in reality they havent done anything that Quake and HL havent done before (and better).

So as my point goes on for far too long, I would just like to shorten it by saying that I would have nothing against a high-tech nintendo console, only that nintendo needs to stay as far away from making games as possible (and also licensing nintendo-only games). With that in mind I just hope that the GameCube gets cracked soon so I can make me some bootlegs. }>

Wayne 01-10-2001 14:18

Areku, you have the right to disagree, but that doesn't make what I said any less true. If you ask *ANYONE* in the home-console video game industry, you will find that the consoles are virtual give-aways and the company makes a very low profit on them. The games are very highly priced and YES, they are licenced by the game manufacturer!!! They get their continued monies on game disc sales. Like it or not, it's fact.

sixdsix 01-10-2001 15:07

Yea.. N64 is a blow hard, save Zelda/Mario... but I think you will be surprised at the GameCube...

Areku 02-10-2001 10:05

I think I'll wait for the critic to talk about the Gamecube... I think nintendo, as Marjin said, has to work hard to be away from the childish games they publish and actually the only ones playable...

AS I said, I've never've enjoyed Nintendo except for the GameBoy, the ONLY true portable console that is still alive after near 10 years... (I just can't wait to hack the GBA and add it fronlights! ;)

As for the costs behind Sega, I do see your point, Wayne, I've realized most of the printer industry does the same: almost giving away printers (E###n does that a lot) but charging shits for a color cartidge.

I guess it happens more or less the same with consoles, but then again, why disappearing??!?! DC is still FAR superior to PSXOne... May be what Sega ####ed up is their money policies, I STILL think piracy would have played an important role on DC's life, regardless the loss in software piracy which EVERY gaming company has to face; remember the first rule of a cracker: WHat a man can protect, another can hack it! ;)

32_Pistoleta 02-10-2001 13:36

At first: DC Rulezzzz!
Secondly: Sony's only interests was to sell as more consoles as they can to get a lot money. So they don't shitting up about any piracy and other stuff. They make money on CONSOLE. Sega is vice-versa: the main stream of bucks was earned with the help of software (cause SEGA was mostly software company) via GAMES. So, the piracy is the main enemy of SEGA's budgete... cause nobody want to buy highly priced GD-ROM if they can free download it form the undernet and make a copy. And I think that SEGA make a wise step going only on software - believe me they get more money on doing first-class games for different consoles. This way SEGA'll never die and if they get powerfull enough maybe someday they decided to make a hardware again. Sega's know how to make GREATEST games ever... look at all the Genesis game line... all of them a HITs.

And what about NINTENDO - I respect them - It's an old player on the game market - so it's earned our respect. What about Sony - I always say that they SUCKS forever and I hope they die :) someday. It console with the bunch of shittiest game ever been released. It grows it's popularity because of 4-5 real good games that even not SONY was made. All HITs was made up by third-party companies. the only plus of the SONY - they know marketing very well and because of the wisely advertisement they win the race.... but not our HEARTS!

The console vendors don't make much on the consoles, not since the NES. When the NES appeared and Nintendo started making a couple bucks on every legitimate game sold (licensing fees), the whole licensing model changed. The console manufacturers' goal became to get as many consoles out there as possible because they make the bucks on the games sold, not on the hardware.

Piracy doesn't hurt a console (or computer) platform much while it is a small minority of users doing it - due to prohibitive costs for equipment (the multi game doctor cost like $600, for example), because it requires a fair amount of technical ability to do, or if the bandwidth is too slow to make transferring the ware practical, the pirate numbers will be small enough to not affect the bottom line.

When the technology is cheap and the skill level needed to pirate the games is low (what was called the "xmas modem kid" syndrome in the mid 80's, and is now something like the "lowtech kid with cheap cdrs and a copy of diskjuggler"), you start impacting the game manufacturers' bottom lines. Too many people do that, the game manufacturers move to more lucrative platforms.

As a long time old geezer pirate, I've seen it happen again and again and again.

Areku 03-10-2001 02:21

Hi!

May be if Sega would have decreased prices on hardware and software before, they'd have realized the market would be flooded with DC's instead of PSX's... alone!

I know ###ne is in fact a cheaper hardware, but DC beats it all with its new low price, and most people is getting it NOW in my country, although they'll know Sega's gone from the hardware scene.

Games are ####en greater than the ones in ###ne, and with the ######### madness, hits like MGS or FFIX would make Sega another success.

#### Sega and their economic policy, they rule a lot more than Sony and FAR FAR more than Nintendo. "You should not have left us behind! ;)"

Since more or less we all agree here, why do u think Sega has burnt out and Sony is still alive?

Cause Sony is not a company that doing ONLY games-related production. So they can spend money earned from another part of the market to up their console. Sega can't. The only money they have is form the gamer's pockets. They have no guarantees... this is the only way they earned money.

It's like about X-Box: BG says that if he forced to sell console for the VERY low-price he'll not hesitate only to take his part in this race cause he has a lot money and he don't worry about popularity - he knows that it'll be bought.... and he wins on the soft.
